Holy Warriors - Civilization 5 (BNW) Succession Game

Can't sleep, so I peeked. Yes, nice work, I see we made peace with Rome. I also see four artillery - must be one more purchased and one must have come from a city-state, nice.

Either Sweden or Russia could be next. I want to say Sweden just because it'll take forever to walk to Russia then to Sweden then back east through Russia to the last targets. But Russia is fine too.

We only have 3/6 trade routes. Looks like we lost all three land caravans in the Rome war. We need to rebuild them. Probably as ships to trade with the city-states is the safest way.

Might be time to annex Onondaga, it's building an unhelpful Stable now, and we have plenty of money for the courthouse. Get it building and staffing a university.

Don't use the prophet on Rome, regular pressure will convert it fairly soon, save him for the Sweden and Russia capitals.

Perhaps a harbor in Divinity could help reaching some far CSs. I think Cahokia had a druidism quest, so a TR to them would give natural pressure.

IT: Queued research towards Steam Power (which is on the way to Flight and Railroad). Paid 500g to Mbanza-Kongo for 25t of friendhsip. Reviewed unit positioning and found it good
Russia completed Red Fort. Sweden captured Akwesasme as expected

T210: War declared. Apparently we broke a promise of some kind?

Also our income goes down to 30ish gpt. A little worrying perhaps? Although we lose 3 of our 6 trade routes as they were with Roman cities or went through Roman territory
Rome's resistance is almost non-existent. Bombardment takes the city down to half health with no retaliating unit in sight

Rome and Morocco sign peace, immediately followed by a DoF. I guess they're suddenly united in their hatred towards us?

T211: Another round of bombardment, and Rome is ripe for the taking

Catherine comes and complains gow aggressive we are and how bad it is. You're next on the list girl....

Defence around Antium is non-existent as well. Pity the terrain is so annoying, we won't be able to fully take advantage of Artilleries...

T212: Two thousand years later...

Look at the scary army of Workesr Rome is sending towards us!

Wait, Artillery can shoot over jungle?? This unit is OP! Also of note, another free Worker. This one unfortunately we won't be able to take advantage of, it doesn't have any movement points when captured, and I'm not leaving a unit in range of Neapolis on the interturn. But at least I will force Rome to use a unit recapturing it instead of doing something useful..

T213: Great scientist is born. I decide to use him to bulb Scientific Theory in a couple of turns
Rome finally has a few units near Antium. Nothing threatening, but I have to kill one so that the Lancer can climb the hill and provide visibility for Artillery again

T214: Antium falls. I wasn't even planning to attack it this turn, but two Artillery volleys took away all its remaining hit points, and the Lancer I've been using to provide visibility had just enough movements to capture the city

Rome's units try to recapture, but lack firepower. One Legion and one Treb don't take a late game city, even if it's at 25% health

Also, a Roman unit which is not a Legion or a Trebuchet (or a Worker) has beet spotted this turn!

T215: We receive a free Artillery from Valetta, and have enough faith to purchase one. Should be enough to deal with Neapolis
World Fair done

Also I go ahead with the Scientific Theory bulb this turn

T216: Apparently Artilleries can even shoot over mountains? That's one strong unit

The first volley hits Neapolis, and Caesar comes to see us on the interturn, offering Neapolis in a peace treaty. As Neapolis is the last city we were planning to capture, I accept

Catherine wasn't happy

T217: Annexed Onondaga as suggested by T-hawk
Ruins on a remote island give us 20 culture. Better than nothing I guess

T218: Mbanza-Kongo gifted another Artillery, which is currently near Onondaga
Brazil stole Astronomy

T220: World Congress convened to discuss if we should continue our host responsibilities - looks like we will hold that position for now

Cumae looks like it's falling to Sweden

And that's the end of my lengthy turnset!

Notes:
* I'm building roads between Marrakesh and the former Rome and between Marrakesh and Onondago which don't go through others' territory. With our empire growing, we need a good road network
* I think we should attack Russia next, mostly due to geography. With Sweden, we can easily get to and capture former Iroquois cities, but getting to their core through all the mountains and hills is going to be problematic. If we go through Russia, after capturing Novgorod and Moscow, we will open a way to Sigtuna and Stockholm through terrain which is less rough, and starting from Moscow, where our whole army will be at the time
* Keeping that in mind, I started building a road from Rome towards Russia
* I did not move the military this turn
* I set Faith to start working on Taj Mahal, as didn't see a better build. Feel free to overrule. Most other cities are working on Public Schools, except Divinity, which is building replacement Cargo Ships (the last one to be finished next turn). As T-hawk suggested (and I was thinking the same), I set up gold trade routes with city states with the new ships finished in my turnset
* We should finish Steam Power in 6 turns. From there, I think we should research Railroad before Flight, and upgrade our roads to railroads. We need to improve mobility of our units I think

Ichabod is up!

Looks like nice work from what I can seehammer

What did we take for the policy from World's Fair? I may be too late now to respond to Thawk's ideas about the next 2 policies/ideology, but thinking aiming for freedom specialist-happy still the best option. Even though we are still in the green after taking those roman cities, it looks like the pace of capture might be picking up so I think happiness more important than tech. I think.

Tenatively agree with Yuris on attacking Russia before sweden. let the swedes send more units at rome first.

I took the Honour opening as Honour towards Discipline seemed to be as close to consensus as we were going to get

Cumae is the only Roman city Sweden can reach, Ravenna is behind our territory, and I don't expect an open borders agreement of any kind with Sweden. So if they take Cumae, they won't be able to throw more units at Rome

The ability "Indirect Fire" on artillery means they can shoot over anything. So at 3 tile range, they can always shoot a city without being in range to get shot back. Yes they are strong.

Honor-Discipline does seem as good a choice as any. Maybe Freedom specialist happy after that, might happen before the game ends.

Ok, attack Russia before Sweden, either sounds fine to me.

I do think Flight before Railroad. Flight also allows perfectly mobile units. It takes longer than you think to actually build all the railroads.

after the techs on discussion, Replaceable Parts for the Statue of Liberty will give a free policy. probably worth it eventually.

Maybe we got it, but don't we need Biology for oil to build the airplanes? Biology first would also keep us in industrial age (cheaper artillery) for a bit longer. So that's my vote.

Good point. We don't have Biology, no

See it. I'll play it on friday, most likely.

Back on the grid! more thoughts after looking at the save:

-I don't like the windmill build in Onondaga at all. There are still two good happy builds available (stone works, unique building). If we really want a production boost (and I don't think we do) factory is better.
-for the new Roman cities, I think we are close to the end and generally want hammers over food. So I'd prefer lumbermills on the forests over cutting down and farming.
-Rome has some good hills not claimed, maybe move the Great Work from Onodaga there to give it a little culture? (this is minor)
-agree on Russia next still
-Research flight for some turns after Steam Power. our spy in Lisbon may be able to swipe Navigation in 8-9 turns. After that, Biology before Flight.
-staff the Public School scientists as they finish. Capital can run another scientist right now.

looking at world congress, does the Embargo Celts proposal block trade routes with City States? Is that worrying enough to try to vote down over the +culture from wonders?
