Luckily I have a RAID controller built into this MB, but I want to wait for the HD prices to drop later this year (they went through the roof with the floods in Thailand). However, I'm not entire sure how large I ought to make the array.
Ruff, I have an old Geforce 260, and it plays pretty much everything I want it to. T-hawk just bought an AMD (read old ATI) 6670 which should do everything he wants it to, for about $75. I take it you are specing the PC up on the DELL website? Are you going to build it yourself or just buy it straight up? I would have thought you'd save money building it yourself.

Ruff -
CPU - You definitely want to jump to an i5 and it also looks like the 2550K hits the best value there.
Memory - no comment on the brand - but if you are using windows7 64-bit, grab the extra 4 GB and go up to 8. It puts it to good use.
GPU - there is a definite jump in performance from the 550 line to the 560. The stock 560 is definitely worth the $20 over the 550ti. After that, I don't think you are going to notice much bang for your buck. The 560 should serve you well. Plus you get the "free" upgrade to 2Gb. Here is a site that you can do some comparisons on (I punched in the 560 vs 560ti as I was curious if it would be worth $40 more to make that jump - I don't see that it is)
http://www.hwcompare.com/10981/geforce-g...tx-560-ti/
mobo - Consider an SLI board if you think you are going to run 3-4 monitors. If you expect never to have that need, non-SLI is fine. Asus is a good name in motherboards - I have one and its worked great.

Those pics are from http://www.ibuypower.com. I have a dell and I was looking at getting a new dell before I started this thread. However, all of the memory options on dell are for 1333 chips and they want $340 for the move from 8Gb to 16Gb ... the web sites I have looked at can do it for $86 - goodbye (not goodbuy) dell.
I'm not planning on building it myself - I'll let them put it together for me.

My question on memory isn't do I move from 4Gb to 8Gb (I am doing at least that), but do I go the next step to 16Gb - do you have an opinion on that?
I have finally decided to put down some cash and register a website. It is www.ruffhi.com. Now I remain free to move the hosting options without having to change the name of the site.

Hey Ruff, check out slick deals with you are buying off a Name Brand site:
http://slickdeals.net/hp-home-home-offic...e-coupons/
There's a 25% off. Also DON'T buy ibuypower, they are really expensive and overpriced. As for memory, well buy some after market and stick it in there, Sandy Bridges are LOCKED at 1333mhz. Its about $100 for 16 GB. If you aren't overclocking, just buy a i5-2500 or i7-2600. Really if you are going to go Brand name, go buy a base model with the processor and OS you want, no warranty, and bling it out.

I just went back and looked at the video card I got after my Dell video card decided to move onto greener pastures (EVGA GeForce 9400 GT 1GB DDR2) - here is the comparison with what I am currently looking at (from waterbat's link).

Here is another wrinkle (final one, I promise) ...
![[Image: quiet.jpg]](http://i253.photobucket.com/albums/hh46/Ruff_Hi/quiet.jpg)
Worth it or not? This thing will sit beside me in an office I share with my wife. The old vid card fan was a nightmare - got a new quiet fan and now it is lovely.
I was thinking spending the $49 but not the $89 ... or will the case I am looking at (Corsair Obsidian Series 550D) have enough built in sound reduction that I don't need it.
My very final option is that I have a PC shop down the street that have been pretty useful to me - I could drop in on them with these specs and ask them to price it if they built it.

antisocialmunky Wrote:Is fine, also on sale: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.as...6814130625 That is $13 less that iBuyPower was quoting it at. They provide the option of a 2nd card so you can see exactly what they are charging for it.
That said, even I can drop in a video card. I could buy it post market and install it myself. I would need to factor in the shipping. Something else to think about.
