Always war vets game?

Sounds like good rules.

Just to clarify, we're not doing the advanced start thing, where certain traits give certain free buildings and tile improvements. I find that way too confusing and invokes the metagame far too early.

No.

If you're just wanting a mirrored map from your tool, checked for balance and all/with minor modifications, I could do that. Is that still the preference?

Well, that was exactly what I was asking. I personally do like that "advanced" starting thing, because

1) it gives you something to think about early
2) it makes it much easier to really see different strategies at work
3) without it you have the first 50-60 turns of every game play pretty much the exact same imo
4) everyone has the same possibilities and so it isn't any more unbalancing than the sheer skill disparity between the players which we have either way

Basically, as long as we find someone to provide a sensible list I would really like to do that if there is any way. Also because as a last reason why we should do it:

5) if we don't do that, we will have to discuss which civs/traits to ban

And if we start with no FIN, or no combination of FIN/CRE/EXP or other such stuff it takes so much away from the game imo that we all can as well just play the same leader and civ. I mean thats the gist of banning certain traits / civs anyhow, to make sure that everyone is just playing with a civ/trait which doesn't have much if any influence on the game.

Serdoa, if everyone groks the new traits equally well, it'll be just as predictable a snake pick. The disadvantage is we risk introducing traits that are even more OP than EXP.

Like Ichabod's stance on advanced starts, I prefer not having too much decided before the game even starts.
I have to run.

I prefer no advansed start but i am fine with it to, no barbs, i think no restriction game its just fine.I Can be last to pick.

I certainly won't insist on it, though I thought I should make my reasoning clear. On that matter I would like to elaborate. I can agree with you that we risk making the traits even more unbalanced than they are right now. But how big a risk is that really? Certainly, in PBEM32 IMP was made pretty strong. But that meant it could be coupled with several other strong traits (FIN, EXP, CRE, maybe even PHI with its bonuses). In vanilla Civ, there is FIN and EXP and maybe CRE. Therefore that are at most 3 combinations (FIN/EXP, EXP/CRE, FIN/CRE) which can be considered nearly equally strong.

Additionally, if something is really unbalanced we have 4 experienced players and me and I am certain one of us would make it known so that we can together decide that it should be changed. I think taking that into account the risk of unbalancing the traits is really small. But keeping them as they are in vanilla makes certain that we do have a heavily unbalanced game imo.

The other point mentioned was that too much is decided before game-start. I am not sure if that is true. I can't neither see in PBEM32 nor PBEM39 that something was decided due to the picks. Both games certainly had a much faster start but I think that was more due to starting with a worker.

As I said at the start, I won't insist on it, but I would like everyone to at least consider what I wrote. If you still would rather play vanilla-style are there any bans you would like to see? No India/Inca, FIN / EXP or whatever?

Well I agree with Serdoa that the augmented starts based on traits have been great in 32 and 39. But I don't see support for it in this game - all three other players prefer a more normal start. Myself, I was assuming a fairly normal start but being fine with either.

Mackoti seems content with all leaders and civs available. I gather Serdoa would prefer the choice not be so obvious but without outright removing options if possible. Novice and Nicolae haven't expressed a preference about this as far as I can tell.

What would you all think of something like this?

Each of FIN/EXP/CRE/India/Inca: -1 forest in capital BFC
All other traits: +1 forest in capital BFC
Each of AGG/CHA/PRO: Also, 1 flat plains converted to grass in capital BFC, and a custom-made avatar subtitled "Playin' with the pros"

Then just do a snake pick with everything allowed.
