not a peninsula, basically, I though that the landmass extended in that direction, and that there were no connections in the north, since it's the very top of the map. It turns out to be the other way round.

Or I'm on an island.

Big and small maps are unpredictable. Expect the unexpected, plan for the unknown and carry a big stick etc.

Dotmap so far:

Comm got a tech.

There is no land connection to the north-east. So either I'm on an island, or the landmass is connected along that narrow isthmus to the west.

I decided to risk my scout this turn and send it that hill next to the lion. I really need to see enough of the land there to decide where I'm going to settle, East or West. I do have odds on the Lion, but still, there's a good chance it'll die. Fortunately it saw enough that I think I am going to settle on the plains hill the scout is standing on. Since the land to the East is only accessible to other players by sea, I'd rather settle to the west at first, and a grassland sheep is better than a plains sheep for food.

My next tech after BW is definitely going to be Animal Husbandry, there's a lot of camps that need built, especially that deer to the East.

My capital:

So far at least, I have to say my workboat+Fishing first strategy is working out.

The scout lived, on .1 health, so I decided to just send him out to explore, instead of coming home and sitting around for a good long while healing.

more exploring of the land to the west:

Am I on an island? Is everyone? Maybe the map is of a bunch of small scraggly continents separated by 1-2 tile thick stretches of water.

Yes, I am on an island:

After dancing around a Tiger for 1bout 10 turns trying to get my 0.1 health scout to reveal that last peninsula to the south-west, I've finally confirmed that I'm on an island.

Room for 13 cities total, but I may well start expanding overseas before I completely fill up my island. Now I really wish I hadnt gone West for my second city, I went in that direction assuming that way lay the rest of a larger landmass I was sharing with other civs, but it's not as good a spot as the ones to the East. Next turn I settle the X 3E of my cap, with the sheep already improved, and I have AH so I can improve the deer 2S.
My second city, Home at Last, isn't going to be worth a whole lot for a while, with such limited food, but it has decent early game commerce and hammers with the fur camp and forested plains silk. It's building a workboat to scout.

Demos:

Looking pretty good over-all, and will improve as I'm about to settle another city.

Missed Buddhism by 1 turn. I wasn't all that interested in getting it, I just was already planning on teching to Priesthood after Writing, but once I got Pottery I realised I wasn't going to be building a Library for at least a dozen turns or so, so what's the point in getting Writing now when I could go to Priesthood and possibly get Buddhism.

I'll finish Meditation and then get Writing, ~6 turns at break-even. I'll quickly chop out a Library from my cap after that settler so I can start running a pair of scientists asap. My plan involves bulbing one of Alphabet or Maths and bulbing Philosophy. I'll also try for the Oracle, in which case I'll bulb Maths for the extra chop hammers and use the Oracle for Code of Laws. I can then tech Alphabet manually and bulb Philosophy for an early swap into Caste and Pacifism.

Edit: just noticed on Civstats that Comm razed a city of Superdeath's, I think an auto-raze if I am interpreting civstats correctly (it doesn't show a score increase for Comm at the same time as SD's score decrease). They're also both whipping heavily. This mostly just makes me question the map more, I guess I'm just really lucky starting on a decent sized land-mass of my own.
