[SPOILERS] Margarita and the Lurkers

I got "We love the King" event in the capitol - anybody knows what triggers it? I have only one extra happy in the capitol, weird. I have also read somewhere that this event cancels maintenance costs of the city for one turn - is that true?
Reply

Yes. I believe it is randomly triggered when the city is beneath the happy cap.
Erebus in the Balance - a FFH Modmod based around balancing and polishing FFH for streamlined competitive play.

Ah, so it is random. O, well. I guess it is rare, too - mine is already gone frown.

T111. Not much changes, although I was wrong about the Great Lighthouse - turns out Eagles are building Moais Statues in the lighthouse equipped capitol. Looks like nobody wants to be defeated in the GLH race ...

Another non-news is that Orgy built Apostolic Palace - it was obvious they are going to do it soon after they bulbed Theology. Yossadorn got Polytheism this turn, nobody else got a new tech. We are borderline managing to get Civil Service in 4 turns, but since I will not be revolting immediately, I will probably set it to 5 turns to avoid building Wealth in some cities.

Yuufo's army is a combination of axes, Spears and Chariots (and Warrior) - probably about 20 non-warrior units. I really need advice how to defend - our NAP expires too soon, so he will have for sure numbers on me. I was thinking that I should try to get to technologically superior units to counter that. I can try to get Crossbows, Longbows, Maces or Catapults - but definitely not all of them frown And wil have not many turns to build units. Which would be best investment? If I get Crossbows, I would automatically get Maces - as I have civil service.

I am not interested in attacking Yuufo - at least not anytime soon wink. With Stone, I will get my city defenses to ~50%. What should I build?

Eagles (Suttocrats) got Aesthetics this turns. Suttocrats have a huge score jump this turn - like 50 points! - must be a combined effect of Aesthetics + Moai in the capitol + some pop increases. Suttocrats are also putting all their EP on me now, to keep seeing my research - probably they want to see if they have any competition to wonders opened by Aesthetics.

Nobody still built Great Lighthouse - I wonder if this situation will last until turn 200 or something.

Yuufo wrote you us official letter saying their will be no NAP extension - so anyway I am not in a position to chase wonders.

Suttocrats are now firmly ahead in beakers researched: 4915, with Orgy 4192 and us 4015. But since we have Civil Service to finish in 3 turns, we are in fact even with Suttocrats - and should pull ahead significantly in about 6 turns shhh

On less entertaining subjects, looks like Yuufo is forcing me to do detour into some military tech - I could either go Longbows or Crossbows/Maceman. Actually, form my testing Crossbows may be best against aces - and they also get city garrison promotion. I can also start to research machinery slightly earlier, although getting crossbow requires also Iron Working, Iron connected plus archery (can do all this before NAP expiration, with just a couple turns to build them). since I am getting Civil Service soon, I will be able to build maces immediately after I get machinery - and they get City Raider, in case I decided to show India how they annoyed me wink

T113. Eggheads got Priesthood, Isabella (Yossadorn) got Monotheism and we got

We have finally started to build our defenses - it was high time as we have reached #1 in land and #10 in soldiers wink.

I am still contemplating relative advantages of getting Crossbows/ Macemans or Longbows. Most likely aggressor currently has only Axes/Spears/Chariots, but is not far away from cats, either. Lurkers opinions would be very welcome smile.

I am currently leaning towards Crossbows/Maceman as they provide "2 in 1" - both good melee and archery unit and are flexible - can be used both for defense and offense. Longbows can actually be also use for offence, but anyway my most important problem is defense, and I have a couple nice hill cities. Another advantage of LBs is that they open Vassalage civic and I will be revolting to OR soon anyway, so that would give me free promotion and lower units maintenance costs. On the other hand, I can revolt to OR and buro in just 3 turns, the earliest could revolt into OR /Vassalage would be about 10 turns and at least initially, it will be much worse than Buro, since I have a very nice, size 12 and still growing, capitol, that has been developed for Buro capitol for a long time now. Revolting to Buro would give me immediately +21 coins and +6 hammers (minus ~10 coins in higher civic maintenance costs), and profit will be growing steadily with the growth of the capitol (I have enough happy now for it to hit size 16, thanks to our
excellent UB smile).

Demohacking update:

Recently (T113) Suttree got Aesthetics. T114 Dinos got Calendar. T115 Eggheads got Monarchy and Yossa priesthood.

Beaker researched:

1. Suttree 4915
2. Orgy 4192
3. Us 4015
4. Eggheads 3949
5. Dinos 3000
Then Yuufo, Yossa, Aivo, Rome and Cannibals

Cities:

1. Eggheads 14
2. Yuufo & Us 13
3. Eagles & Yossadorn 12

Then Dinos, Orgy, Aivo, Rome, Cannibals

Civfanatics is down again - at least for me frown

Can somebody remind me, please: swordsman can be upgraded to a mace? Is the same true for spear? Can anything be upgraded to crossbowman?

I am actually not interested in cash upgrades - but in what happens to units already being built when new technology is discovered. I know, e.g. that axe will be automatically upgraded to mace and a warrior to a spear. I was wondering what would happen to spears and swords in the queue, when I will gain ability to build maces?
Reply

According to this reference, swords upgrade to maces, and archers may upgrade to longbows or crossbows. But this chart, I know, is incomplete.

For prebuilds and promoting in the queue, the way it works is that builds will only change if you can build _all_ of the units that the build can upgrade into. And the unit can no longer be built. So a sword or axe will change to a mace if they become available, but an archer will not change to a longbow, unless you have machinery (and iron) too! It's kind of screwy.

For the authoritative reference, you can look at the XML file that for me is at:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Sid Meier's Civilization IV Beyond the Sword\Beyond the Sword\Assets\XML\Units\Civ4UnitInfos.xml. It's hard to read, but you're looking for the <UnitClassUpgrades> tags.

E.g. a warrior upgrades to a spear or axe. A quechua can upgrade to a spear, axe, or mace. So this is why quechuas can still be built with iron (until maces) and warriors can't! There's a similar effect where Praetorians don't become obsolete until rifling, where Swords do get replaced by maces.

Spears upgrade to pikes, so builds will stick until Engineering.

@ WilliamLP Yeah, I figured it out from experimentations with World Builder that swords and axes would upgrade to maces, but archers would not to X-bows, but you explain logic behind it nicely. I normally use CFC site for reference, but it was not working (for me only?) for couple of days
