My experience with Varus as a teammate is he can really control a lane with the poke. But unless he gets serious farm and bullies around the opposing AD he becomes ineffectual late.
As Rammus I can walk up to him, hold him in place, and shrug off the damage while my team piles on if they don't get huge amounts of farm.
His skillshot ult though does wreck havoc on poorly coordinated teams that stand together. But since it does almost zero damage it just doesn't fit as well with the skillset of damage damage and more poke damage.
In short. Great poke for early lane, but lacks the raw damage and escape of Vayne.
That being said, paired with the right support and you can make someone's life real miserable in solo queue. Poke. Poke. Poke. Dead.
Caveat: I don't play in uber levels of pro-ness, so my experience is highly subjective.

I have been contemplating a build for Varus to make him more viable mid to lategame but please don't bite my head off (if it's too much of a crazy ideea) we live and learn through trial and error.
I haven't played him yet this is based solely on the videos sullla posted on youtube and own3d and my experience with his alter ego from DotA (Sylvanas Windrunner).
Just the items i will not dare to suggest runes and masteries untill i play him myself. Actually it is a view based on his passive and his "w" aka his 2 passives:
boots+3 pots>> rush Malady if possible (so it can stack with Varus's "W" on each attack) and then berserker greaves if not berserker greaves and then malady but the first one preferably
3rd item should be black cleaver for the dmg , bonus atk speed and passive that combos nicely with the passives OR bloodthirster
4th item bloodthirster for a lil more sustain or black cleaver if you didn't /couldn't build it yet
5th infinity edge
6th i would like wits end for the same passive stacking as malady tho it might be too late feel free to insert it earlyer
again dont bite my head off if this seems stupid but i think it deserves at the very least a test before dumping it in the bin

Frankly I don't get what this accomplishes: You get a magic damage item that you compliment by stacking flat armor penetration, and then you get Bloodthirster that maxes AD, then you get Infinity Edge and then you give up the crit from IE you just invested into to get Wit's End to compliment your early Malady. This is all over the place and doesn't serve towards his late game.
No, Varus as an "AD carry" doesn't have a "bad" late game; AD carries, generally, have the best late game of all the classes, it's just that comparatively Caitlyn won't deal quite as much damage/have quite as much utility/be as mobile as Vayne/Kog'Maw/Corki/whatever.
For that reason, I don't think you should deviate from the standard Greaves+IE+PD+LW core with Bloodthirster and Quicksilver Sash/Guardian Angel as next items.

I'm sorry Voldy, but that's really not a good build for Varus. As Seyruun said, a standard AD build is best for him.

I suppose the other option is to try to build him similar to Teemo, but put him bottom with a bruiser support. Put the AP solo top and AD mid (maybe Corki/Vayne top depending on enemy picks?) and take a bruiser jungler. Though TBH I'd only see that working in draft pick, and as a counter strategy....

Other guy gets double doran sword and zerks while you have malady and boots 1. Other guy will just stomp on you in lane, varus best point outside of late game where any ranged dps becomes super big. Very little reason to deviate from the typical ad carry build, like sullla and seyruun say.

I think it's a minor problem with the game in general at the moment that there's so clearly one 'best' AD carry build. The main problem is that there are three effective multipliers for ranged carries: damage, crit chance and attack speed. Because they're multipliers, you need to max all three in roughly equal proportions, and there's nothing that does this better than IE (AD, Crit AND a crit multiplier) and PD (crit, AS).
I don't know how to get around it, but IE/PD is so much better than all the other options. It seems a shame...

Technically there are four multipliers, the fourth being crit damage which IE also does, but you also improve with masteries and could with runes, but most don't bother with the runes /nitpick

There do exist decent mid-game options (Bloodthirster first if you are Vayne, and Corki or Ezreal with Black Cleaver or Trinity Force), but they still don't give as much late game damage as the IE/PD combo so you have to capitalize on them.
