By walls I meant cities or forts. Walls and Castles are useless at this point in the game, but you can only flank on open terrain...
Attack order is which units you use first. Do you charge in with all your cats or use your praets to scratch the top defenders or just stack attack with the whole lot?
And that last statement tells me you haven't tried simming the battle yet

Really? I swore I was flanked in a city recently, though the only time I can ever remember being flanked was in the recent adventure--my memory must be going bad
Of course I haven't simmed the battle--you can't effectively sim promotions, right? Not to mention I honestly don't care enough about a lost battle to build a ~100 unit sandbox.
Then again, given events in a certain other game, I might end up stepping away from Civ in general, at least for the time being--the save's actually in my inbox now, but I made the mistake of looking at PB18 before I went to bed--not that I should be playing a presumed attack at midnight anyway, even before my mood turned sour

Why can't you sim promotions? You can just assign them in worldbuilder however you'd like, although I wouldn't build a 100 unit sandbox from scratch just to sim one battle either.
And keep your chin up, winning and losing are only a small part of the game... if someone messes with your plans, you can always make new ones...

Argh! Spoilers!
Don't make me unsubscribe...
I tend not to bother with promos unless the initial sim is tight. And this is a 50 unit battle tops .

Believe me, I'm trying my best to keep the games separate (or at least keep PB18 out of this thread--I'm a lot more liberal the other way around, but even there I'm not putting specific current details), but I feel like my mood plays a large part in these games, for better or worse, so there's going to be some overlap, at least in the vaguest terms of how it affects my mood. Don't unsubscribe, please!
Oh, you can? It must be damage you can't assign then, and I'm confusing the two. I have no idea how you're getting only a 50 unit battle though--it'll take me two units at least to kill all his Rifles, Cavs, and Curaissier, and that's assuming I don't get unlucky (which considering the rest of this game, I see no reason I wouldn't), and his trash is better than my trash (I have a ton of Praets left, but that doesn't help against Cho-Ko-Nus).
With regard to the "winning/losing doesn't matter" cliche, it really does matter to me for better or worse--and my game's been lost since T40 (or even earlier, when I started settling my horrendous dotmap), and I really, really hate when I lose to things I can't control (and/or things I've seen coming for forever). It's even worse when in the heat of the moment I don't see people, just pixels

I don't know what happened--Old Harry was slyly hinting that I should be able to take out the entire eastern stack with my units, but I wasn't even close--I don't think more units could have been added from last turn, but still, I had to attack since AT was going to defend the stack with a Machine Gun next turn. Depending on how many units still have promotions left (considering a lot of the stack was highly promoted already, I doubt many do), I should be able to either finish off the stack next turn or make him retreat it this turn. The problem with that is that I have nothing left in that case--Caldisla will fall next turn even if his eastern stack retreated and I moved every single unit into the capital (since he has a ton of siege--sure it could survive a turn due to sheer numbers, but all the siege means it will fall.

Well, Twinkletoes is declaring next turn, since he has a ton of troops on my border, and I'm losing Caldisla this turn no matter what I do--I haven't played this turn (or at least not in a meaningful way); anyone want to finish it out?

It might be cathartic for you to finish it out yourself...

More important - did B4ndit quit when you attacked him?

Sorry, I thought I replied to this - I think if you attacked them on flat ground you would have. Even attacking on the hill you got close. If he had added a machine gun on top that would only take two or three knights to kill. Hitting them on the hills makes most of the units 25% stronger and allows him to retreat . That way why I was asking what you thought he'd do next turn.
More generally I was talking about the order of the attack earlier because I thought you had enough ancient trash to suicide into him until your Grenadiers got good odds on his stack, allowing you to have strong units survive, get promos and get back up north. Obviously fighting at the tech disadvantage you had destroying both stacks would have been difficult to do, but with enough cats anything is possible.
A couple more things I thought of in retrospect
- you could have done with a road on the hill east of your capital to let you shuttle units between the two threatened cities easier
- you could leave anti-two-move units fortified in both cities and have a zone defense stack in-between
Sorry I didn't mention them earlier...
Anyway what do you think you've learned from this fight?
