With only one catapult and then lead with Xbows. I mean, I'm really starting to appreciate Xbows, but this is just not how you use them. Use Maces as shock troops or knights, but I do believe he got unlucky.

can't fault Harry for Cylindrical; Commodore insisted on it before the game got started, and I went along with it just to get the game started and sweep away all the troubles we had with PB24... I was just happy we didn't have huts.

Hmmm, I've never really thought of xbows as good units... although I found myself wishing I made some in PB22, just to counter Korea's pike spam, which was to counter my Knight spam... but that was a pretty niche situation, and what else would you use them for besides that? They seem awkward because they have a high price point and they really only counter Swords (which have an efficient price point, so xbows aren't great against them), Maces (which don't get built much because they're shitty per-hammer compared to what you get from Knights), and as stack cover for Knights, as above. I dunno...

When you are fighting on hills and an opponent has a preponderance of ancient era junk like impi. Don't want manny but when you add a single xbow to a stack what are you going to do with those follow up units.

Ouch.

It sure looks toroidal to me.

The impression I got earlier was that you were building too many Libraries btw. Once you get the Pyramids up those are good buildings of course but I thought you started doing it earlier. What to build instead is a tough question, if those really were the best builds though then you'd be better off focusing a bit more on tech and less on hammers I think.

Turn report time. It's T139. I log in to see what Elkad has done to defend himself now that my units have extended range from Engineering. The answer is: Not much. So I attack Utrect with 2 HA and Impi leading to:
1 HA withdraw, 1 one, then the Impi cleaned up and was deleted after razing the city. Couldn't hold it short of total conquest, but it hurts Elkad and it's an attempt to leverage him to giving me Leiden for peace.
Well, as far as leverage went it wasn't going to do much because Elkad threw everything at defending Leiden. Like fuck did Elkad plan on doing anything apart from being a stubborn bastard to the end, not that I blame him for that of course. It's a respectable action.
But he attacked out after I bombed down with 2 cats and put an extra LB on the tile:
The clean up isn't straight forward though (not difficult, just not usual cleanup). Elkad had:
- 64hp, G1 Xbow
- 46hp, G1 Xbow
- 16hp, C3 Xbow with attached GG
Against this I had:
- ~50hp, C1 WE with 5/5XP
- 50hp, C1 axe with 2/2XP
- ~55hp, G1 LB with 5/5XP
It's not enough to clean up with, even though I have odds on the first two battles. That sugegsts that Elkad has reinforcements ready to be dropped into the city next turn. What I have in Nijmegan though, is:
- 100hp, C1/S Impi
- 100hp, HA with 10/2XP
That HA was promoted F1>F2>Morale so that it could attack the top strength Xbow:
- F2/Mo HA v G1 Xbow: 66% retreat, Xbow down to 28hp
- C2 WE v 46hp G1 Xbow: 88.8% win
- ~70hp G2 LB v 28hp G1 Xbow: 93.7% win
- C1/S Impi v 16hp C3 Xbow: 94% win
And Elkad keeps on hating me. I have enough stuff left over, full health with a road into the new city to hold it against any more reinforcements because I now how longbows to sit in the city and stop it dying to Xbows attackign swords on defense. The tactical retreat a few turns ago has been turned into a ton of GG points and I've lost a grand total of 150 hammers in the exchange; Elkad just lost a GG and 625 hammers from when I took over the game. And some of that isn't even his, that includes a gifted pike from scumbag Commodore.
I kept the city for the simple reason that whilst it kinda sucks, it can steal food from Nijmegan and be vaguely useful. It stops Elkad from being a prat and settling the northern area of the island that is in his culture and I can't settle, and hey, even though I'm IMP it still saves me a settler.
Because I like green text /4chan.
This city is the replacement for Utrecht, I whipped the settler last turn after razing the city, built it hte turn before with the knowledge I was going to attack. Mids city will help to hold the plains hill west of the rice when borders pop in 2 turns. Pushing a bit of culture will do the rest, because if Elkad attacks with his now weakened forces I'm going to crush his slow mover stack and then try to move in on him. So this city is essentially bait. The only tile that Elkad can resettle on is 3 tiles north of Mids city, every other location is now invalidated. The border is secure but attacking Elkad is going to be a bitch...not that I really need to.
I'm going to go to bed shortly, I'll do a general update later.

Hmmm... I felt like I had too many libraries too, feel-wise at least, even with my plan of Pyramids in mind (I was fairly sure I wanted them at that point; I was actually thinking of going Alpha->Math->Currency or Math->Alpha->Currency), but it seemed like the right move at the time because I was lacking in useful things to build (nowhere to expand, plenty of workers already, couldn't whip due to low happy cap, no fruitful opportunities to attack because despite all my rage I was still just a rat in a multi-colored cage, etc) and I could at least see the library spam leading towards catching up with Com in tech. At that point, remember, (T80-T90ish is when all my libraries went up, IIRC) Commodore was, like, dozens of turns ahead of the pack tech-wise due to the Currency slingshot, and I was desperate to catch up with him. My economy wasn't crashed by a longshot, but it was not very good either, at least compared to what I needed to hit that goal.... I think one big piece here is that I didn't get foreign ICTRs until around T125ish because HAK, my only possible source, nuked ours right before Alpha. In hindsight, considering that, the library spam worked out pretty well... but maybe I'm overlooking an opportunity somewhere.
I'm also still wondering if I misread Elkad's galley, where I offered him Ivory to back off. He never mentioned it in his thread. That was a really big deal, like a kick in the gut for 10 turns.
What would you have done there, TBS? Let's say, from here: http://realmsbeyond.net/forums/showthrea...#pid540041
