I put a sentry chariot in Mr C's capital and found those Galleys (purple circle).  They are way up north, without their Tri support (green circle).
That might be a mistake, especially if I can put a large enough force to keep them in the north.  The northern choke point will also keep those
galleys away from landing units on MY GEM ISLAND!

Almost finished Civil Service this turn ... the last turn of my Spy Golden Age. I should be able to stumble over the line next turn.

While we all watch FT and Cornstarch chew into Commodore ... here is another chopping board.

I started with some tawny walnut from wood workers source and noticed that two and a bit of the boards had some really uniform and straight grain.

See the bottom section of this piece of wood.  That opened up some nice options.

I cut 1" wide strips from the 2 and a bit boards ... ending up with about a dozen 1" wide, 18" long strips ... with all the grain running along the strip.

I then glued them together at 30° angle.

[Thank you high school maths - I knew that the 30° / 60° triangle with sides 1 unit, hypotenuse 2 units and third side root 3 (~1.73) units so I could approximate 30°]

I then took this wonky cutting board and cut another set of 1" strips (also seen above) at 30°.  Had to make a 30° block so I could hold the piece and get the first cut.  Then I used that edge to cut the rest.
After that ... I straightened out the 1" strips into a more regular chopping board ...

Final little bit was flipping every other strip and gluing together.  Tied up with a planning and now am in the middle of sanding ... 120 ... 220 ... etc.

Router is still in the shop getting repaid so I still have to round the corners, apply oil and buff.

Well ... that is not a good sign. 73 pts. That must be close to a size 6ish city. I tihnk the only one he can hit is the old Roman capital ... and that had a ton of units in there.



Bah ... hot knife and butter time.

And it probably means no Civil Service this turn. And definitely no hunting for a Great Priest.

Ok ... previous pitboss game I learnt to settle for Copper with the first city ... and then to build defenses enough to deter any initial questions.

This game I learnt to a) keep up in tech (learnt the goal, not the execution) and b) work out how to defend border cities.

Initial thinking about border cities

• they are for losing to invading forces
  
• stack them with defenders against quick movers (ie elephants, pikes and spears)
  
• promote your defenders!
  
• put them on a hill with walls
  
• keep you I WILL HURT YOU (with cats) army as a quick reaction force, close enough to the border city to hit back
  
• no forests near cities (any cities)
  
• try to keep a killing flat land between an invader and your cities
  
• promote your defenders!
  

I dropped down to Commodore and Mr C strength this turn. Early attacks were repelled by Elephants (but I have a feeling that they were NOT promoted) and I left too many cats in that city. Cats are hopeless defenders ... they are for returning the pain.

Nah, what you learned is Commodore gives really poor starts sometimes where the only way out is to eat a neighbor early.
