What sort of CIV games do you prefer to play?

Pitboss for two main reasons. The first, more people can play, which makes for a much more interesting game dynamic IMO. The second, I don't have to remember to send the save after playing.

For me, the big advantage of pitboss is not having to worry about reloads. For example:

Pitboss 8 spoiler!
If Azza had won four straight chariot vs. chariot battles in a PBEM, I guarantee that there would have been implications or outright accusations of reload cheating.

I know it's possible to cheat in pitboss, but I'm reminded of the saying about door locks: they're there to keep honest people honest.

In FfH games with lairs, not having to worry about reloading is a particularly big deal because the lair results range from really bad to really good.

I like pitbosses for the reasons scooter outlined. I like the pacing of normal speed and having more players smile.

Well I plumped for PBEM. I've not played pitboss, but from my PBEM experience I like the format (even if it is slow). But the biggest issue for me is that my time and internet may not be able to handle a pitboss game, whereas sending emails once a day is no hassle and I can usually get a window I will definitely play a PBEM turn in.

Isn't there a setting to not generate new seeds on reload? I mean you could hack the save game file I suppose to get around that but if people are going to that degree to cheat then I don't think even pitboss is likely 100% secure.

Pitboss also has it's own technical limitations that I know have come up here such as people being unable to connect to do their turn because somebody else was logged in with some firewall setting preventing them from joining.

PBEM cheating, if it happens, is based on someone loading a save, taking a battle at low odds and then if they lose quitting and reloading the save. There is, unfortunately, no way to prevent this with PBEM. In other words, PBEM won't let a player win a battle for sure but an unscrupulous player can avoid losing a battle if desired.

Right right, wasn't thinking it through fully.

TBH: That sounds like more work than simply reading another player's spoiler thread.

If someone *really* wants to cheat in a PBEM game: they don't need to reload.

Just have a look at another player's spoiler thread. They'll probably see their opponents plans and possibly even their troop placements. That's more than enough advantage to win a war.

Heck, that crap goes double for PB games. The game can't be reloaded. But spoiler threads can be looked at.

And one of the greatest things I like about the RB PBEM community, is that we trust each other not to do that kind of crap.

Instead, we post pictures and updates from our games and trust that our opponents are honourable.

There is in fact a way to prevent most cheating:

Create an environment where cheating is unthinkable.

RB is that environment.*
