Old Harry may have talked me out of barb submarines and other assorted niceties initially, but I'm sure they remain available.

Have we ever actually DONE the barbarian submarine thing?
Because I find it epically funny and would honestly be ok with a mapmaker doing it. Bad game design, gonna screw someone over, but such hilarity...
Alternatively, less likely to totally ruin someone's game, Astronomy island with a patrolling barbarian modern armor... If only Giant Death Robots were in base-BTS

Timothy Zahn is the best.
Barb submarine is a reference to PBEM...24? Where Bob put them in the central lake - Commodore was even in that game.
(They aren't actually integrally bad map design, tbh, and were put in the game with a very specific balancing purpose which was lost on their removal. Whether or not that was an appropriate decision is open to debate.)

I get the intent and all, but the implementation was streaky as hell. Very much open to fair debate? If it was a good idea. But the peanut galley debating what's "an appropriate decision" for what all the players was a unanimous consensus on their game...always struck me as a touch sanctimonious.
In other news, Old Harry, it seems Dzai automatically opted to forgo those food resources for a while. That's one strike against Arabia and religious gambitage.

You think they're likely to go religion first with India? I would think it's the opposite, India is forced into going fishing/hunting/ag first to not have an utterly awful start.

I'm guessing that as soon as a barb city spawned where the MA could reach it the unit mission would go into city defense mode instead of doing anything entertaining with the unit. I played a SP game once where I gave one AI civ a couple advanced weapons to see what it would do with them and in that case, at least, the AI completely squandered the advantage by sending the units for home defense instead of using them at the front (where I had placed them!)
