Well you can choose to screw yourself over, so arguably that's not an illusion.

But if they know that going in, why not just settle the thing for them? Is the illusion of choice /that/ important?

A more professional answer is probably that over time, I think it has become accepted that starts are designed to be balanced between players, even if players are given obvious choices on T0. This implies that moving is always a players decision to question and disagree with the mapmakers view of the map balance. And that has historically always been left up to the player. So the choice can be viewed as a players trust or lack thereof in the mapmaker. All the discussion and suggestions I've made have been about ensuring players have more reasons to trust the map maker. So really I'm not trying to remove that choice, I'm trying support better map balance.

But yes, if you wanted to push me on that, it's a choice I wish wasn't necessary but I wouldn't want to go further. As a mapmaker, I want players to trust me so I can design and build a map that will be fun to play and and the players can go e me a good game to lurk, but I know that I have to give reasons for them to do so.

Confirmation of mapmaker: Mardoc has agreed to be the mapmaker for this game.

Taotao, thank you for offering to be the map maker. I would enjoy to play on one of your maps, but personally I'd rather you play so I can try and claim vengeance after PB27. You teaming up with Commodore?

You're playing in this?

I don't have time for a PitBoss as a plauer, but 76 is moving slowly enough that I could do some low key dedlurking.

I have a n00b question about exactly what "AI-diplo" means.

This means I can only make offers an AI would understand, correct?  It's clear I can't do things like rename units to send messages, but there are no conventions about (for instance) what a simple Open Borders agreement is understood to mean, right?

I ask because I've read about diplomacy in "no-diplomacy" Diplomacy before. Yes, that is a thing. crazyeye As in, in the board game Diplomacy by Avalon Hill, with no actual words communicable, you'd still be able to do things like support the movement of a fleet from St. Petersburg into Switzerland to signal a desire for peace with Russia.  (You can always see others' orders in Diplomacy.  And yes, you can't actually move a fleet from St. Petersburg to Switzerland, for about four different reasons. lol )

Also, about the map, I'm not asking for the map to be perfectly even, just interesting and not blatantly unfair.  Regular unfair is fine (unavoidable in Civilization anyway).

This is a fair question about AI diplo. For example, I was under impression that it our rules do not prohibit stuff like fish-for-fish offers to signal general friendliness but do prohibit offering a specific amount of cash to communicate at which turn you wanna declare a war against a common enemy, for example. Are we all on the same page here?
