Rather than an era in, which nerfs the barbs a bit, I'd rather just make sure we're guarantee'd a pair of blitzes early on. FFH11 is an excellent template, I think. But without blitz or advanced start, the early game really sucks for PBEM.
I've got some dirt on my shoulder, can you brush it off for me?

I'd rather start from the beginning with a blitz or two to get us on our way.

I can't guarantee I'll be around for a blitz for the next 6 weeks. I'd actually say it's close to certain that I won't be, in fact, due to working nights and weekends.

Blitzing is not a necessity for me, and I don't mind the slow FfH opening. So I would be happy with either setting. I'm not sure which techs are included in the Ancient Era though, it may be quite a few.

Yeah, that is a lot. I'm surprised the underlined ones aren't left out tbh (though I suppose Lanun would want Fishing...). Hunting though is such a huge tech...
What about this, if people think it'll be slow: Start with all of the first tier techs, Agri, Exploartion, Crafting, Anc Chants, plus Mining and a worker?

IIRC it's Ancient Chants, Agriculture, Animal Husbandry, Crafting, Mining, Masonry, Calendar, Mysticism, Education, Festivals, Archery, Hunting, Fishing. Maybe Cartography too.
It's pretty fun- I usually play SP one era in. Being able to start off in God King and build hawks very early on speeds up development & scouting at a rate about commensurate with the free techs. Lots of neat choices from turn 0- do you beeline Drama for the free artist ASAP or try for one of the early religions? Do you want to build a worker or a market... or something else? And so forth. It can be an issue with huts though, since you'll be just one lucky pop away from having Animal Handling, which if you can get early enough probably means Game Over for everyone else (or at least anyone close by).

Whilst I appreciate that the start can be a bit slow in ffh, I don't really want to start 1 era in.
In the interest of getting things moving...

* Map type? Something normal, if in doubt more lush then dry and starting spots AND areas which are at least not to much different from one another. Natural looking is fine and all but if it means that one player does not have rivers or does have to expand aggressively just to get a few riverside tiles it is game over on turn 0 - and thats no fun at all.
* Always War/Diplomacy allowed? No/Yes
* Leader Duplicates allowed? Don't care
* Snake pic? Yes
I haven't discussed those with WK though, so if he voices his disagreement with any one of the above I might change.
