Savage Tide : In Character

"Thank you, Lady Vanderboren," Aliandra smiles at their host. "Friends, I don't know the nature of you accomodations; perhaps we should retire to a local establishment to rest and plan and begin first thing on the morrow?" she suggested. "I am currently lodged at the Bent Goblin inn, just a few blocks away. That is where my equipment is stored."

Anders nodded. There would be much to plan tonight. "Sounds like a good plan."

@Bacchus
Theres not really anything you remember about the ship

Lavinia seemed satisfied with the talk you've had and rose from the table after finishing the meal
"Well then, it appears that we have an argeement, you'll get in touch when your done. Kora will show you out"

Kora, whom stood quietly in the corner, waiting on any request from Lady Vanderboren bought out the plates and showed you out the private dining room through the courtyard and the atrium and bowed to you.

"I really hope that you could help the mistress, she's been taking the last couple of weeks quite harsh"

By Aliandra's suggestion you move to The Bent Goblin inn where you manage to get a quiet table.

Anders orders a cheap drink at the tavern and then turns to face his new companions.

"The way I see it, this job boils down to Vark. We want to retrieve the money, and we want to know what Vark's up to. We could observe or break into the ship, but that doesn't guarantee us anything. So I saw we start with Vark.

Diplomacy's been tried, and it failed. I say we set a tail on him for a day, figure out where he spends his time, then the next day ambush him and get him to spill where the gold's at and what's up with the ship.

So, opinions?

The halfling kept her money to herself and plunged straight into the discussion,

Is Vark not just a goon put in charge by the harbormaster? Hardly surprising Lavinia couldn't reason with him — but if we go to the source, we might achieve better results. If nothing else, we will get a little context on how and why this 'misunderstanding' arose in the first place.

Plus, trailing Vark is just inviting trouble — he has friends, pretty much minions, his gang, what if our tracker is spotted and confronted? I don't think Lavinia will cover us for any commotion we cause in broad daylight...

Himo definitely gets a drink. Something fruity. He just kinda takes a sip, though, then lets it on the table while he talks.

I want to know what's going on, yes. But I don't see how that gets us closer to Vanderboren being able to pay her debts. Including the one that totally means I get to have a longbow. No more borrowing Dad's to go practice! The money she gave this Vark guy is just the fees, what we really need is that signet ring to unlock her treasure!

So what I want to do is spend some time watching the ship. See if they have watches set up, how many people there are, what they're doing with it, if they seem to be looking for the signet too. I think I can be pretty good at that. Just need to set up some sort of blind. Maybe rent a room that overlooks the ship? Or a stall in the market?

But I guess we don't need all of us to do that. Maybe we could both watch the ship and follow Vark around? Maybe even one of you townsmen can ask around, see if anyone knows what's going on?

Aliandra looked at Himo with newfound admiration. He seemed to be more cunning than his manner let on.

"Unfortunately I don't believe there is anything but guildhalls near the pier. We would have to sneak into one if we wanted to overlook it from a building, and that point we might as well sneak into the ship itself - which we might have to do anyway to retrieve the ring." She looked apprehensive.

"I suppose we should try and get at look at how many men they have, no matter what we're going to do. Perhaps we should send someone to the pier, ostensibly to try and hire the vessel, and get a look at things before being shooed off?"

Holden drank with the others, and carefully followed the conversation. It appeared that everyone was in favor of being sneaky, or at the least, patient about their plans. He was a bit confused. What if they just went and got the ring?

What if we just get the ring? I mean can we make it onto the boat at night? Like right now? Maybe we knock out a guard or two and creep on? Search the hip before sunrise and go? I mean, it's the Lady's boat. Right of way and all that.

He took another swig and felt a bit nervous about his suggestion. Maybe he should have suggested something stealthy too.

Or.. OR! he held up a finger and paused a moment. We put one of us in a barrel and deliver us to the ship to sneak on board, then search the ship at night, and when we get the ring just jump over board and swim to shore! He looked around smiling. Foolproof.

Bullying the bully, eh, Anders? That would be justice, of a sort, but as Himo pointed out our real goal here is the signet ring. Which presumably Vark has not located yet, if recovery of the vessel is being obstructed. Unless your goal is to extract permission to investigate the ship from Vark while he is in a vulnerable position, I'm not sure a direct confrontation would be the wisest course of action.

Moshka, your proposal is to go direct to the harbourmaster? I fear that would merely result in us being referred to Vark - and worse, Vark being informed of the referral. Even if the harbourmaster is not implicit in the nefarious side of the business, bureaucracy will likely rule the day, merely because it can.

Alianda's plan could have merit. We would need to determine something, though - do we send someone more likely to spot something amiss; or one more likely to be realistically interested in the hiring of a vessel, who could perhaps investigate for a longer period before being driven off? Himo or I, with our elven eyes, would likely be the more proficient at the former, but I doubt either of us are capable of aping a noble very well, and we're certainly not obese enough to make a proper 'merchant'.

Holden, your basic plan does strike rather true to the overall aim of the operation. And your suggested subterfuge is certainly... novel. We'll definitely need you at hand if direct engagement is unavoidable - which, given Vark is involved, it may well be, if only to impart some measure of justice onto such a base thug.

Kaisa idly swirled her tankard, the water within providing an unfortunately clear view of the discoloured base, stained by months, if not years, of poorly cleaned ale residue.

We definitely want to scope out the situation before we make a move to actually board the ship and search for the ring. And keeping a covert eye on Vark at the same time would help us avoid any unwanted surprises. I do believe it to be important that we move quickly here, though; if we delay too long then Vark may make off with our prize before us, potentially leaving us none the wiser. I would propose a single night of investigation, two at most, before me make a move on the ship.

Are there any buildings near the ship that we can climb and get a better vantage point from?
