Oh look Firaxis, you stole the unrestricted leaders idea (well actually we gave it to you), and now it's being parroted as new. It's a 20 year old idea. I remember the original discussions about the views on that.

It seems like a solid solution for the problem we've been trying to solve via mods forever - civs with early bonuses are just inherently better. Flattening that out to be per-age rather than per-game is interesting. I did laugh just now at them saying "for the first time in franchise history leaders are picked separately from civs." I understand why they claimed this, but it's not exactly true obviously.
The age system has potential in a single player format. if you saw the way they are implementing it, the ability to choose civs other than the one you're locked into is unlocked by RNG elements, e.g. "have 3 horses and you can go mongolia." Game purely designed around SP

It honestly looks like a Humankind knockoff, of all things.

Thanks for posting the link.
Glad to see I am not the only one thinking Humankind with the ages and civ changes. And also the unrestricted leaders thing -- forgetting their own history, Firaxis? Probably just marketing hype, hopefully they are not THAT ignorant.
The game will not be ready, not really, until 2030 anyway. It always takes 5 years of rigours play to make a version of Civ complete and relatively playable.
