RB PBEM #1 - Discussion Thread - No Players!

Really? How early does Henge fall? I can definately see that being useful if it falls a little late and you started on top of stone (I know that falls within one of Sunrises' exceptions.)

I'm not a regular CTON player, but getting 'henge is always nice. And it's cheap on quick speed anyway...of course it's the question if you want to bend your civ for ensuring to get it. Probably not. Settlers, Workers, Units are almost all times higher on the list...

A game that will never make it past the early medieval period is simply going to play out differently. Not just the tactics, but the entire strategic makeup of the game is fundamentally different. The free-for-all Multiplayer games are also Always War, and don't allow ANY communication whatsoever... well, needless to say, it's a different beast entirely. I don't think the comparisons to "CTONs" (God, I hate that stupid name) are really worth much. Might as well be comparing ice skating to ice hockey. lol

Here's what interests me: all five players have essentially decided to go with cardboard cutout militaries and focus on growth-oriented starts. (Either building settlers/workers or lots of wonders.) It's a very "Single Player" oriented approach, to make up a phrase. I would have been curious - or will be curious to watch, if it happens - someone go the military route: build two cities, crank out some axes, and go for the fast elimination.

Now there are two very good reasons not to try that: Quick speed, and the very real possibility of becoming a diplomatic pariah afterwards. Still, wouldn't it have been fun to watch someone go for a completely different approach? Sometimes our folks at RB are maybe a little too respectful towards one another. tongue

You should only go for a rush if you have some pretty bad lands to expand into; the only person who got bad lands (comparatively was mh, but he has no strat resource with which to rush. Also, this is a Highlands map, so is slightly large that normal, and has the mountins in teh way.

This isn't a rushing map. And that's a good thing; rushing only makes sense when the starts are unbalanced and one player has significantly better growth than another.

I don't think this is true Krill. Let's say I feel I'm equal skill to the other 4 players. So if we all take similar strategies I have a 20% chance of winning. So any risky strategy needs only a 20.1% chance of success to be worthwhile if it ensures you win the game.

@Sullla - I think the diplo hit is a small reason why no one rushed, but I think the much larger reason is that players would feel bad if they eliminated someone else from the game.

But against competant opponents, is a rush 20% likely to improve you position? A choke, I'd probably agree with you, but a rush requires more than that; it can't be pulled off with just warriors, hooking up a strat resource is a necessity, and you might run into archers...

Well... had any of the players in this game made the decision to gamble on an early rush hoping to meet light resistence, it would have worked on all 5 civs. In particular, athlete could have stormed m_h with chariots as soon as he saw horses in his BFC and m_h would probably be gone by now.

I found it particularly amusing when he got concerned about the soldiers score in the demographics.

Not against ladder players smile Our RB guys are awesome, but of course they aren't going to have the experience with crazy early warring, with a few exceptions.
