[SPOILERS] Balseraphs: A Guide to Mis-Management (by Kyan and TT)

Kyan Wrote:This turn was all about the barbs as we discovered a lion, gryphon and hill giant nearby.

Wouldn't it be cool if there were some way (a promotion you could take on one of your units, say) that would let you recruit those animals onto your team tongue

Kyan Wrote:That hill giant moved 1W and gryphon moved 1E last turn so i may make a mad dash for the tribal hut.

More like a slow slog across the desert. Note that the griffon can move two tiles over any kind of terrain. It might be better to leave the hut until your animal capturing lizard (nudge, nudge) can move there. If you try to pop the hut with your scout, I bet you a doughnut that he is eaten before he can get there.

Haha. Your point is not only noted, but agreed with. However, how do you currently propose i deal with the hippus situation?

My current thinking is that i leave both lizards combat 1 for now and move them in. Once they're in range, i re-open negotiations. Explain that i'm no longer going to be the one ceding all the land/mana etc. I *hope* to gain a strong deal and NAP (til t150) from him without having to go through with a choke. I can then promote subdue animal and go hunting lol

As for the hut, i'm tempted to take the risk because i have already met one neighbour. There was a marble immediately between our land and the hippus and there is a marble over by that hut in front of a mountain range. Whats the betting that another civ live behind that range? I'd rather get the hut for us.

Yeah, def. get that gryphon if you can. Flying units are scarce in FFH- permanent flying units even more so. Being able to hide out on mountains or lakes or whatever, threatening to pick off a player's workers or low strength units or explore their lairs with a HN unit is strategically a great option to have =) Plus they're one of the few units which can explore those always-annoying "shipwrecks-in-a-lake", and you can get one way earlier than a cultist.

The lion won't do much more than cost you troop fees right now, though. Strength 3 is too weak to do much damage, and you won't have a carnival to join it to for a while yet, unless you beeline Festivals for some reason.

You can't capture hill giants using recon units unless you have the "subdue beast" promotion, which your lizards will never get, so don't bother trying. Gibbon can mind control them, though- so don't kill them off you think you might want one someday.

The only reason i'd want one is so i could eat people's scouting units with a HN unit. I could even give him a witty name like 'wolf rider' ?

Heh. It works a little bit better if you know that units are going to be headed for a certain location, and you have more than 3 strength tongue

A Festivals beeline is not a bad idea for the Balseraphs - gives access to Freaks, Freak Shows, and Markets. Not to mention the Grand Menagerie, which is a really nice (and really cheap) wonder. Super early animal capturing units could mean a realistic shot at the Menagerie.

Weren't you just advocating a straight beeline to CoL like two days ago, though? tongue

As von Moltke said, "no plan survives contact with the enemy." In this case, my plan didn't survive contact with unexpected allies.

Bearing in mind the crazy amounts of floodplains discovered thus far... is the chance of a menagerie really going to make that much difference?

Current plan is AH -> Calendar -> Chants -> Education -> CoL on your reccommendation!

Is it a menagerie pre-req? If so, it would be worth getting and putting to sleep in the capital at least?

What do i need for menagerie?

Lion
Tiger
Gorilla
Wolf
Bear ?
