Not in a hurry for a new computer

Pretty sure yes on the first. Don't know about the speeds, if each pair will run at their rated speed or if all run at the slowest.

Here's a guide, the 1st PC is pretty close to what you want, just drop in a i5 instead:

As far as memory goes, same speed and preferably same brand and voltage.

For the memory, matched sticks is easiest, but only required for dual-channel mode in paired slots. Matched brand is also easiest but is never really a requirement. Consider just 8 gigs - memory is expensive right now and depending on your applications and usage pattern 8 gigs could be plenty or not nearly enough. If you do want 16gigs now I'd go ahead and buy an 8+8gig kit unless you're finding 4+4+4+4 for quite a bit cheaper.

For the GPU buy what you feel like spending. GPUs are nice in that performance is pretty linear with price. If you have X budget and can use performance, spend X. Otherwise just buy the level of performance you need.

With the CPU, I disagree with T-Hawk. The 4670 gives you 400mhz base and 600mgz turbo over the 4430. Almost 20% faster for a CPU you're going to keep for many years is worthwhile IMHO. The chips have the same TDP raring too, so I wouldn't worry too much about temps.

EDIT: Of LoL is your most demanding game it may be worthwhile to check the performance of the integrated GPU on that i5. If it's fast enough that will save you a lot of cash, complexity, and heat/noise.

Thanks for the advice guys.

In the end I did a little bit of everything. I plumped for the 4670, but didn't buy a graphics card: I'll test out the integrated graphics for LoL tonight and put it through a stress test or two to see what happens, but worst case scenario I have to go out on Saturday to buy the 7790. I also stuck the the 2*4GB RAM: The main reason I wanted more was to try and extend the life of a future SSD, but I can wait a a month or two to buy that extra RAM. Now just have to go and collect it and try not to break it as I put it together...

If you aren't playing Modern FPS or RTS, then you could just spring for an AMD A-10. That should play everything and is powerful enough for daily tasks.

These days Good Enough buying has eclipsed getting top of the line stuff unless you want to do content creation.

Well, my day is just getting worse and worse. I got everything, built the PC, turned it on with the minimum items hooked up and...nada. spent 3 hours trouble shooting before I managed to get it working, and then Windows wouldn't boot (or rather crashes to what looks like a BSOD for a slit second then restarts) due what I think is a software error.

And the hilarious part is that I don't actually own a SATA DVD drive to reinstall windows.

You can reinstall Windows from HDD or from USB flash.

I could do...apart from the problem that I don't have a USB stick, nor the ISO file on hand on any HDD, so...

Can you get a USB CD drive at your university? I grabbed one from my work to load Windows onto my son's computer.

I'm just going to buy a DVD drive tomorrow...although I just remembered I have an old USB external HDD...so I'm going to see if I can use that rather than a USB stick for flug_autos idea thumbsup

If you guys hadn't noticed already I'm quite the technological illiterate.

EDIT: Not possible, I have a 64 bit version of Windows 7 but running 32 bit Vista on this laptop, so can't create a boot drive...
