Hi there I did find the game through the forums, although I haven't played Civ 4 MP competetively before. The weird and very large setup decided me to reinstall Civ 4 after years of neglect and give it a try. So no, I was not shooting for a win and was more interested on the ride. That being said, I did feel a huge pressure of being boxed in in my little hilly corner, and went for a couple of aggressive block cities. I was thinking that people tend to avoid early wars before catapults and the fear of another neighbor invading would hold them back. I was totally wrong with that, got dogpiled and that was the end of that

Thanks for your reply, Meiz!
Starting next to a player like JP is about the worst position one could be in in a game like this. Particularly if he was lucky enough to land a FIN civ that can get to catapults comparatively quickly. You are right that "pink dotting" is probably not the ideal strategy on a map this large when playing Deity. Not only from a cost perspective, but also with a view towards "defendability".
I though I could handle the costs, being Financial / Organized but it did slow my start considerably (moving the settlers and the delay with worker actions) so I do regret the choice in the end. I do think I started in a really boxed corner, with Flunky also taking up all the islands that I thought could be mine. The land was pretty bad for food & cottages where financial trait would shine, so I went for an all-in expansion tactic, which clearly didn't pay
Superdeath isn't being done any favors by the contrast of Naufragar here; both of them are fairly screwed but Superdeath is in a nice safe corner pocket, he just had a little boys-playing-rough warrior fun early on. Meanwhile, Naufrager is in Poland with a universe that seems determined to make him roleplay...being Poland.

I write RPG adventures, and blog about it, check it out.
A shame superjm isn't reporting, from what I get from departs in civforum, he seems to actually be doing best among our guys. Got a cat/phant stack building up currently.
He is likely to end up between the two current favourites though...
Any word on donovan? his position seemed interesting.

He harassed the Australian Mongolian with early triremes, got an island city, but had to give or back for peace. At least he derailed Australia somewhat making him research MC and mass producing triremes when he wasnt planning to. Now they are at peace racing to astronomy (miles away still I think), but Australia can cut off his trade routes anytime. Hasn't though, weirdly, it seems he just doesn't want the stress of perpetual war.
Donovan has somewhat more resources at less cities, but his starting location had him in a difficult spot from t0 on.
DZ has landed troops in Australia after an OB agreement was reached after cessation of hostilities. They should give him an idea, how big shade's (the player sitting in Australia playing Genghis Khan) cities are and what chances he might have against him should the war resume. It's going to be interesting to see to what conclusions he comes and how he will act on them...
In case you are interested in what is going on in Japan (DZ plays Tokugawa and sits in New Zealand), check out the Mongol Story in Civforum.
This last page contains current pictures of Donovan's Land. Be aware that the story is in a "protected" subforum, which means that it can only be viewed by registered users, though!
Oh, and if you are interested in how BaII is faring in his defense against wahl-profi (who conquered Ninja-Germany just prior to this attack), check out the current page of the Russian Story for pictures of the opening phase of that particular war.
Wahl-profi's story is in the "open" section of the Civforum and should therefore be viewable by anyone without having to register. |
