Somewhat often? I really don't pay too close attention to know what the trends are with the latest patch. But in this game Bulgaria just took a bite out of their northwest so they aren't invincible.

Yeah, I had the choice to attempt suicide because he was Melancholic. But if that had failed then it might have gone worse. I probably should have done it anyway just to have the better ruler take over.
It is generally good to have a bank of gold saved up when you die so your heir has the ability win over opinions of vassals with feasts or pay for mercenaries while he gets his power base up.
The problem with prestige and piety is there generally aren't fast ways to dump it or convert it to other benefits. You definitely see me doing with a bit with asking my head of faith for gold, but there's a cool down for that
