[PB36 Spoilers] GermanJoey's Meltdown Betting Pool

Opportunity costs aren't that severe as you actually need to grow the capital. I suppose bureau whips would be nice though. If there is a ton of land to claim figuring out the fastest growth route seems important.

(update from 2 days ago!)

been real busy, but here's an update:

here's one of the barb cities:

it has... a levy, i guess? more useful than the pointless shrine. i waited here an extra turn and the axe went towards a different direction, so that's nice.

more importantly:

hey obama, where's da food at? Krill, i know you like to dotmap, but the only circle i can see myself drawing on this map so far is a giant fucking circle around the 100 or so tiles in the middle of this screenshot that would be preceded by the letter "N". rant hell, we might have to settle into the jungle by our 4th or 5th settler, ugh.

domestically, went for an early forge. the micro worked out pretty nicely here, completing it with a chop and singlepop whip w/ instant regrowth from 6->5->6. the forge was discounted 24h by OR, and it'll save us about that much on our first settler, to be doublepop whipped the turn after next. it'll pay for itself within about 10T I think, which is pretty solid.

more importantly, it'll give us a GE to rush one of the two big wonders that available. there's one particular one I really want, which I talked about Krill some before the game, but if that one falls for some reason, then the other one would be pretty good too. Krill also convinced me to back off a bit with the aggressiveness of the forge whip, in favor of more fundamental REXing - hence why we have two solid doublewhips ready to slam into settlers one after the other.

speaking of, we just whipped our 4th worker in, and our 5th will pop out the next turn from the overflow + the forest on the iron. i'm sending a newly created warrior to the NW to scout around that grassriver wheat up there, as that's thus far the only good spot revealed for our 3rd city. our explorer is swinging to the SE, where we just met Mr. Cairo's explorer.

finally, there's this bit of news:

that's TBS, who went with Krill's idea to beeline Bureau. and, he logged in right after me and bulbed it, presumably revolting this very turn. this wasn't really a surprise - at least, today it wasn't. i figured out he was doing this a few days ago, when I realized a.) he still hadn't whipped a single time yet and b.) he had a size 7 city in the top 5 wonders list!

i'm still feeling pretty so-so about this play. like, i get that he can now whip his high pop at high efficiency, and knowing him he'll have saved most (all?) of his trees for better chops too. +15h for him for every whip and every chop. but... unlike our engineer, the merchants he ran for the bulb are pretty expensive - the gold they produce is essentially useless for a long time, and he's running those at the expense of, at the very least, 2f1h tiles. for 15 turns. and then he ate a whole turn of anarchy. that means that despite being ~4 pop ahead of the pack on average, he's gotta do at least 8-9 whips/chops just to catch up to everyone else on hammers produced thus far. and then there's the question of how fast he'll be able to develop his land. presuming that he has a similar start to ours, then without whipping and without chopping he probably has at most 2 workers out. now, he's gonna have about the same number of improvements out, 4 or so, because he hasn't wasted time chopping, but from this point going forward he won't be able to chop *and* get workers to new cities because he simply won't have the workers to grow that way. it'll be a pretty fragile dance to say the least.

and this isn't even comparing to an early forge... but, presumably, TBS is pretty confident he'll pull ahead with this play. i'm sure i'll be eating my own words when he has 6 more cities 20 turns from now.

whip counts:
OT4E: 5 pop - 2 doublepop, 1 singlepop
chumchu: 5 pop - 2 doublepop, 1 singlepop
Gavagai: 4 pop - 1 doublepop, 2 singlepop
GermanJoey: 4 pop - 2doublepop, 2 singlepop
Mr Cairo: 3 pop - 3 singlepop
TBS: none

pop counts:
TBS: 11 pop
GermanJoey: 8 pop - 2doublepop, 2 singlepop
OT4E: 7 pop - 2 doublepop, 1 singlepop
chumchu: 7 pop - 2 doublepop, 1 singlepop
Gavagai: 6 pop - 1 doublepop, 2 singlepop
Mr Cairo: 5 pop - 3 singlepop

i don't think i'm gonna track these all game like I did for PB29 - its less meaningful when, e.g. TBS will be in Bureau, and I don't know who has forges. I'm pretty sure OT4E has 2 forges already, because he did 2 singlepop whips on like T7, which makes me think he whipped what he grew on - a pair of forges.

alright here's what we got from yesterday:

talked to krill, we agreed on this purple dot here for city #3, barring the explorer uncovering something earth-shattering. city 4 will go NW near that wheat, most likely.

Wait I actually convinced you? I have zero understanding of this game. I just looked at teh dot map and felt bad that I hadn't made the map.

speaking of the map, here's the NW and SE revealed:

northwest:

southeast:

yes, that's ANOTHER floodplains rice to soak up all our worker turns! arrghhhHh!

our next settler is out in 3T, so we gotta decide on NW or SE. 1N of the SE's floodplains rice is probably the next strongest spot, but i think that if we want to have any chance of scoring those gems we'd wanna settle NW next. however, the terrain around there looks realllly iffy from a defensive standpoint, and i'd rather have a respectable front against Imp Gavagai moreso than the strongest BFC. might be able to make 2S of the gems work, as it's got some mountains on the southern diagonal and a hill on the upper, depending on what else is up there to make such a reach worth it.

we'll know more in a few turns, i guess.

FP rice does start as a 4f tile though

ok, here's what we got. haven't moved the settler yet.

up here, i don't like 2S of the gems anymore - its far too vulnerable to a horse strike later. 1E of the wheat seems like the best spot here, picking up both foods and the westernmost mountain, although that whiffs on both the dyes. 1S of the wheat grabs the southern dye and leaves the option of a filler to the north later.

in the south, we have a very obvious spot 1E of the floodplains rice. this spot relies on 3rd ring borders to be safeish, but since cairo is darius i think we can assume that's ok. it also leaves room for a filler 3W of it much later.

right now, i'm feeling like the southern spot is the stronger option for city 4. what do you think, krill?

tbs is up to 4 cities now. ot4e and gav are the last to 3 cities... i have no idea why the two of them are so slow. OT4E being slow makes me nervous that he's going for a wonder, blegh... i didn't mention this earlier (in the thread at least), but we lost a turn w/ the engineer when i whipped the first settler and didnt notice that the engineer got auto-unassigned when rearranging tiles. well, we'll see...
