Comment regarding Gavs post.
No one looks to be anywhere near circumnavigation. Still, probably needs to be brought up in the Twins thread.

Not really. He had to get passed Commodores "island", and he took a wrong turning so needed OB to get through to make circumnavigation, and he also had to get passed Nauf. He was probably about 10 turns, maybe a bit more, from reaching it. OTOH, if the tiles that Gav said BGN discovered were the critical ones to reach, it would only take BGN one turn of onward travel with his other exploring workboat to get tiles in those columns. So unless Gav is saying it was a toss up and he should have gotten circumnavigation on the turn BGN got it, it's not affected that race. So IMO, it just falls into the category of players needing to be reminded to observe proper war turn splits (exploring workboat whilst at war is still a relevant unit as Gav rightly points out).

And now Rusten says he was 2 turns from completing circumnavigation, but the minimap doesn't suggest that.
Edit: Asked Xenu for scouting screenshots, but he says 2 other work boats should have completed it and not that scouting work boat, but he hasn't logged in for several turns. He's promised to post the screenshots later today, but I don't see any reason there should be a pause and witch hunt here. Just the reminder.

I'm a bit surprised that the mechanics worked that way for Donovan (combat odds showing but not getting the option for declaring war), is that to do with being in culture? Either way I don't think it qualifies for a reload - anyone disagree?

As said in chat: PB2, Whosit, no reload, bad luck, and I wouldn't worry about a single galley.

(November 29th, 2018, 11:25)The Black Sword Wrote: The usual argument against rushing a neighbour on a toroidal map is that you open the land up for the other neighbours. So maybe you get slightly ahead of far flung opponent A but the person who really benefits is the other direct neighbour B. I think we need to see the map shape and how much this logic holds. If they secured a bunch of backlines they can settle at leisure it was worth it. If all that land is contested it is not.
They have definitely set themselves quite a bit behind a peaceful opening IMO, we need to see if it was worth it and they can catch back up.
More mid game invasions tend to make a lot more sense, because the opportunity cost of the units is lower and you can actually capture cities, adding their snowball(buildings, improvements etc.) to yours.
I think we've uncovered enough of the map by now to see that Comm wouldn't have really benefited much by leaving SD alone and trying to out-expand him. SD had more available expansion room and more happy resources available. If Comm had sat back, allowed SD to claim his bronze, and waited for HAs before attacking, Comm could easily have been stuck with a pair of gold resources plus his starting ivory for happy, and a long snaky empire without a lot of strong cities to whip for power.
As it stands, Rusten will probably get some portion of the land SD could have claimed if he'd started on Superdead island instead of Comm's mainland. Still, it looks like Comm could get more of SD's natural expansion room than Rusten, if Comm can block off Rusten in the south and Rusten expands more in the equatorial region than in the antarctic region.
Even so, Rusten had a lot of natural advantages -- his starting island was one of the best, he has a lot of expansion room to his east, and he's having more luck finding happy resources than other players. Of course he's also playing strongly and making good use of those advantages. I am not surprised he's doing better than his competition.

Interesting, looks like Rusten is rushing settlers to the same island where Commodore is currently assaulting a barb city (and possibly also rushing settlers to? Comm's litany of '2 cities next turn' without context of where doesn't help a lurker much). I think we might have found the next flash point. I could see Commodore deciding that the best use of his horse archers is here.

Looks like he's backing off which gives Commodicator a lot of room. Also looks like Rusten has his eyes set on Nauf, again giving Commodicator a lot of freedom. Depends on development speed and war costs which will rise up.

Commodore feels most likely to win, although Rusten certainly has a great chance too.
