What a fucking joke. Limited player numbers, etc. Hate to sound like a boomer, but they're absolutely killing 4x strategy gaming here. Paradox's multiplayer is just dysfunctional. Stuck forever with civ 4... Turning the game into a stupid "choose your path" simulator with vaguely historical themes and pretense of strategy. Ugh

No pitboss is disappointing but expected and understandable. No hotseat is madness. Hotseat multiplayer is where Civ VI got a chance to show it's strengths, and however much i've ranted and raved about the bugs, opaque interface, and dubious balancing choices, VI was a pretty good multiplayer game. VII will never even get the chance to try to demonstrate the same, not in a community like this one that only functions with asynchronous multiplayer.
Always nice to be reminded that you are not a profitable demographic, and thus your opinions are worthless in the eyes of anyone with power over this stuff.

Is there any way to get a sense of the size of the Civ6 online multiplayer base? My gut tells me that 4x strategy gaming is enjoyed as multiplayer by a vanishingly small percentage of total players. Hence Firaxis strangling it of resources.
The Age of Wonders series and the Dominions series are both still being developed with an eye towards multiplayer. (Bing, you around?) And there were a few aborted attempts to slim down 4x gaming specifically to cater to multiplayer (Nexus 5X, Solium Infernum). They bombed.
Ninja'd by William who put it succinctly.

I don't think I've ever been less hyped for a Civilization game. Every new detail I hear just gives me the opposite of excitement.

Damn, no hotseat is bad. Well there is always the evenings to play, but a shame about the PBEM stuff.
Another fly. The map expands with each age. This sounds a bit Euroasia centric to me. It is probably better for the flow of the game, but damn I actually liked it when you were in America situation or on a backward island in CIV IV.

No hotseat. C'mon man. Even Age of Wonders has it and that comes from a much smaller studio and the gameplay is very hostile to hotseat, so it has much lower interest too.

I was surprised they put in the effort for live MP servers but not hotseat. One seems like it would take a lot more work.

Probably because of low interest. Soren pushed teamers because of people dropping out when they are losing. Committing to PBEMs is a harder task then sucking it up when you are losing. So, if players aren't patient enough for continuing a losing game they are not patient enough for PBEMs.

dw guys, i'm sure we'll get hotseat mp in a nice cheap $20 dlc pack a year after release
yeah, my recollection is thst pitboss existed for civ4 only because soren personally prioritized it.... but no non-live MP of any kind?? seriously, i've never understood how people even play live MP in a series like civ.... one night's gaming time is barely enough for one turn
hopefully firaxis will change their mind after reading this thread and trembling at the thought of losing our 20 collective sales
