This 100%. Made me a gamer.

I never actually played Starcraft until I was 15, when a friend lent it to me. And to be honest, I really liked it, but I think if I had encountered that at age 8 I wouldn't have become as addicted to it. Simply because the joy of building a billion tanks and rushing people just has a more emotional connection to me than a bunch of bugs.
Current games (All): RtR: PB83
Ended games (Selection): BTS games: PB1, PB3, PBEM2, PBEM4, PBEM5B, PBEM50. RB mod games: PB5, PB15, PB27, PB37, PB42, PB46, PB71 PB80. FFH games: PBEMVII, PBEMXII. Civ 6: PBEM22 PBEM23Games ded lurked: PB18

BUT DOUBLE BARRELLED TANKS! Yeah, I know, but they have tanks surrounded by creepy elves and weird creepy bugs. Not really the same thing

there are no elves in starcraft!
Starcraft is just aliens, predator, and rambo all crammed into one universe.

That's a great point. I might actually have to go get a copy...
Also, Plako, please put the game on Toroidal and make them play on Emperor. I'd appreciate the chance to lurk a remake of PB3. I still need to perfect my evil cackle.

Dune II was what started the RTS genre as far as I'm concerned. It was awesome.
I have to run.

@Bigger: I do actually own Starcraft, it's just that I only picked it up after tasting the forbidden fruit of turn-based strategy, at which point there was no turning back for me. I played the 100-turn demo of SMAC a disturbing number of times before I even got CIV, or finally found a Mac copy of SMACX. But I still revisit AoE II for the nostalgia from time to time ...

starcraft + brood wars is the crown jewel of RTS, imo, you have to at least work through the campaign.
im pretty sure the MP community is still alive for starcraft 1 on blizzard, even w/ starcraft 2 out and the game being about as old as Civ 2, if that gives you any indication.

Yep, I did play through a bunch of the campaigns. I don't think I played through all of them, but I did have that experience. What do you think of Starcraft II?
