Civilization 5 Announced

Yeah, the aim of Civilization V was never to be a longlasting game. The less input in Multiplayer the worse off a strategy game will be because the AI can only pose so much of a challenge.

I agree, it is time to move on.

It makes sense for a computer to get upset if you settle aggressively on its border- it does not make sense for the AI to settle far-flung cities right on your borders and then get upset that you are close to them. Evidently the Civ V AI does both. No sane or reasonable human player would settle cities far from their core right next to the territory of an opponent and then immediately be incensed that said opponent now has the audacity to share a border with their colony.

Yeah, that is an implementation problem: for instance, there should be methods to build long lasting relationships but Sullla was 100% correct that now TT is disabled there isn't much of a reason to play nice at all. Ultimately, I can't find fault with the argument that 1upt is the basic reason for all of the imbalances.

Quote:I suspect that the computer is simply programmed to get upset if any human cities are within a certain distance of any AI cities, no matter where the cities in question are located. If that is indeed the case, it's very sloppy programming, and it ends up biting the AI by causing it to declare ill-advised wars and antagonizing players who might otherwise be inclined to leave it alone. I think that most of the mp games on these boards have demonstrated that at least some attention must be paid to cooperative diplomacy if you want to secure a win in anything that isn't AW. I don't get the impression that the Civ V AI is capable of any meaningful diplomacy beyond war declarations.

100% agree.

Those are both really good articles, Sullla. It's nice to read such a thorough list of all the problems in civ 5, and with the perspective of a veteran strategy game player. Ironically, even though the game itself isn't much fun, I'm having a lot of fun criticizing it lol. Maybe this whole ordeal will help improve other games that come out.

And, thanks for including what I wrote about the 1UPT problems. It annoyed me how many people seemed to think that simple balance changes like doubling production values would help the game- I think it's already about as balanced as it can get. But a lot of people on the forums seemed to agree, after some thought, that the problems in the economic systems are related to 1UPT, even though most people still seem to really like the idea of 1UPT combat.

I also really liked the "minor complaints" section- a lot of those things really bug me too, and I have no idea how they'd still be around at final release.

Twinkletoes89 Wrote:Rome Total War is the best TW game by far for me and works well in vanilla plus has a huge amount of mods once you get bored.

Buy TW for the mods. There's a wonderful LotR mod called Third Age for Med2(http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3v9FQvwKcWw) as well as realism mods for the period. There's also an East-Asia mod called "All Under Heaven" that I'm personally looking forward to:

However, RTW has probably some of the best and highly researched Pre-Principate Rome period mods ever created between Europa Barbarorum, Roma Surrectum(and the multiple mini campaign games for Marius, Caesar, and the long series of Iberian conflicts), and Rome Total Realism. I'd highly recommend EB myself but I like history more than most people. Heck, just read the infamously long description of this unit: http://europabarbarorum.heimstatt.net/in...tegory=any. And that's just the the research for one unit...

Rome has decent AI especially when it has numbers on its side, just don't expect to make any friends. Medieval 2 has a really decent campaign AI but a battle AI that is only kinda good on flat ground. Its surprised me a couple times and if you are playing Third Age and holding over 9000 Uruk-kai with 1000 elves, it works out pretty awesomely.

Here is how the AI cheats (well 95% of its cheats) from CFC.

1. Diety AI does not start with extra settler. However, it is almost always the first thing it builds for clear reasons.

2. The AI does not ignore unhappyness. It get is muiltplyed by 0.6 . This is extremely powerful.

3. It gets double production. So it can dump out thearters very fast.

The bonus are less then Civ4 1.0 diety but are still extremely high.

I'm still not convinced he did mess up.

I consider the game to be unplayable, but the design isn't bad, it's just that the development (in the testing and revising sense, not the programming sense) was missing. And the reasons for that are most likely financial.

Double post lol

This game has forced me to abuse the broken mechanic of instant heals because that’s the only promotion left in a game where i amm NOT using instant heals at all. rolleye i mean we all know it is broken so now when people honestly are not using it you will force them to use it just because some people like saving them.huh

I don't think a "forever" bet is reasonably possible. It took around 5 years for the directors of Rocky V and Showgirls to say their movies sucked.

If you check out the Civplayers front page you will see a maganzine article that is very lol . So fail!

Another funny thing is the thread where it shows that their was a Fog of War hack that was in Civ4 that is very old. The hackers where smart in not aggesively showing it until the Civ4 patching ended (Admins knew this but did not post to "stop the spread"). Then they had no reason to hide because of the naive rule that Adims cannot do anything unless they can prove it. lol lol

Edit: The leader of Civplayers defaulted on the payout of the "cashkickoff". nono
