Yeah, well I guess you are right lol Though in this special case instead of fooling around I would rather have them go insane on troop production wink

Turn 80:

A somewhat more eventful turn. First we discovered Code of Laws

There were so many talks about Aristocracy on these forums already that I won't restate how strong it is - I simply adopted it, together with Apprenticeship.

That does mean that the settler in production in the capital will take a turn more, but I can live with that. Especially as I had 12 gold distance maintenance already with my 6 cities. Now

Saved 6 gold. And also my 4 (!!) farms are now getting me a ton (!!!!) of commerce, thanks to Financial. I had produced 94 research + gold before I switched, now it is 99. Ok, ok, it is not that much of a change, but it will get more when I get more farms - and I am working on that. wink

Speaking of working on something: I am again pondering about what to research next.

I split my choices in 3 parts. First are the mostly war-time techs.

1) Warfare:

For the Conquest and Military State civic. Conquest does provide 2XP for units as well as let you build military units with food. Military State provides +15% to military unit production as well as lower unit support costs and also lets you draft troops and build troops with gold. Thats both interesting choices for wartime. Also the tech enables the wonder "Form of the Titan" which does provide every unit 2XP. If this would be an all-out war it would be obvious to go for it. Though in our particular situation it first has to be weighed against other options which are better economically and second against options which do provide a stronger military short-term benefit. What brings us to

2) Horseback Riding:

The tech would provide Stables and subsequently (and with Horses) Horsemen. Str 4, 3 Move units. Again, for an all-out war which I have to fight alone this would surely be worthwhile. But for what we have in mind? He will have to split his forces anyway so 3 Movers won't actually make that much difference. After all he has only 4 cities to attack. Why do I even mention it then? Because I remember that the Malakim have a Desert Shrine (instead of the Pagan Temple I think?) which does damage to enemy units next to it. So if he has built some of them, which I guess he will, then our 1 movers will be lacking. That could be helped with 3 movers.

Now that does sound good, so why am I hesitant? Time-constraints. It takes 8 turns for the tech. In this time I would have to

- get a settler next to my horses (doable)
- get a road connection from there to the cap (doable, but will not get several needed improvements in time)

When this is done we would have T88 and would now need to get a stable built in some cities (doable in 2 cities, though obviously it takes some turns)
and then get the actual troops built. That means troop production would start somewhere around turn 92-95 I guess - on T97 we want to have the first troops going. That does not cut it unfortunately. Next option

3) Knowledge of the Ether:

Adepts obviously. But unfortunately my mana would only provide one worthwhile spell, Dance of Blades. And worthwhile is stretching it in my opinion. Lets just pretend we didn't talk about this.

So, only Warfare is interesting from the war-time techs. Lets look at the "economic improvements" branch:

1) Fishing:

Quickly researched in 4 turns and would provide me with the possibility to build workboats, getting my clams worked finally. But it doesn't provide anything else apart from that - it's just one tile I can improve. I could also work several coastal tiles, especially in the cap, but I do not have the population for that and also can instead build workers and get farms going. Certainly something to research sometimes, but I somehow doubt it is the right option for the coming turns.

2) Construction:

I need to research Masonry before I can research Construction. But there is simply no reason to research Masonry except for research Construction. Construction itself does provide our farms the possibility to spread irrigation, which in itself would be a reason to research it as I somehow didn't get all that many rivers. It also lets us build workshops (though I think they are not worth it right now).

As for units, it does provide the catapult. We are going in a war, probably against troops in cities with fortification - catapults probably would be helpful. Only it does take 12 turns to get both techs researched. As with Horseback Riding, I simply won't get the units in time. Still, it does provide with irrigation alone already an incentive to go for it.

3) Hunting:

To get Ivory and therefore another happy. Hunters and Hawks are not to be laughed at either but I hope that uberfish gets at least one to us, so that we actually can rely on his intel instead of having to gather our own.

So, from the economy techs I think only Construction is really interesting, though Hunting does have some things going for it. Off to the last category, "economic buildings".

1) Philosophy:

Bone Palace. Thats pretty much it. Uh yeah, I don't think I will build a wonder right now, at least not that. Just move on, this tech is really only here to have 3 in each category wink

2) Way of the Earthmother:

RoK temples for money, 'nuff said.

Unitwise the Soldiers of Kilmorph cost 60 hammers. I'd rather build a Freak for 40 which is as strong and might have nice mutations as well - or maybe even better I would built nearly 4 warriors which are each 1 str less. But hey, it's 4 of them! wink What might be interesting though is the Thane of Kilmorph. Creating a Great Work for 13 Culture would make cities come instantly come out of revolt. Though we have to take cities first for it to work. It would also be a Medic unit, which might be worth it. Though call, I am not too experienced with warfare in FFH2.

3) Writing:

Providing Libraries, a strong wonder with the Great Library (which only a few of us could build already but I feel like Ilios might be doing exactly that right now) and lets us build Research. Well, I will get involved in a war in some turns, so I probably don't want to spend production right now on building Libraries. Short-term, this won't be a benefit.

Conclusion

Warfare, Construction, Hunting, RoK - those are the 4 techs to choose one from. Someone want to guess which one I will choose next turn?

Foreign news

I finally made contact with Sciz

Guess I was lucky to actually make contact with him here - lets see if this city belongs to Sciz still after this turn. Though I hope so, because I want the Doviello occupied AND I don't want them to make progress. Not that there is much to make progress left anyway. Sciz has his capital and one city left, thats it. Though that is only one city less then the Calabim. And he does get copper from Ilios, depending on his production speed, some warriors with bronze weapons in a fortified position could be rather nasty. So his capital might actually be save.
Reply

Spreading RoK yourself makes the shrine stronger, given who owns it I'd recommend against that.

Personally I'd probably get construction. It helps the economy, and it provides you with the one unit that could actually help you win the war as well - catapults. Until people have Sorcery, catapults are the one and only stack killers, and are pretty much your only hope of taking a city. Otherwise if his cities are even the least bit defended, your units likely won't have much useful to do but pillage.

You might not get many catapults in time for the launch, but you'll get them in time to protect from a counter-attack and for the follow-up second wave. Sure it takes a long time to get catapults, but they bring you to the next tier in army strength. The sooner you start getting them the better.

Warfare would probably be the best thing to get after that.

Turn 81:

And again I was greeted by an event

Guell is the city I only recently planted and this pasture was built on the Sheep tile next to it. That makes a 3/0/1 tile in a 5/0/3 tile if I remember correctly. If only there would be more magically built roads popping up wink

I then felt lucky, so I attacked at 25% odds a Lizardman, standing on the ruin next to Guell. I had troops in there so the plan was to lose this guy and win with the next one. Well

It seems he didn't want to die, so next turn I will have two promotions in hand for him.

Apart from those two nothing special happened. I moved my troops and workers, finished some builds (Warrior, Elder Council), changed some tiles which were worked by the cities and - as Irgy rightly suggested - started to research Masonry to follow it up with Construction. Quiet obvious as the only tech which does help with the Economy and with the war.

Speaking of the war, I found half of Sciz troops with Loki

9 warriors. And near Doviello troops as well as a Doviello settler. I informed Mist about that.

And another war has broken out as well

I checked it in the logs, it was the Elves which declared war on the Malakim. As of now I am waiting for explanation by uberfish for the reasons.

As stated in my last post, I informed Mist about the Dwarven stack.

Quote:Night. Sleeping. Counting sheep - dwarven sheep.

Your are woken up by your guards, alarming you that a messenger has reached your palace. You are furious that your beauty rest is interrupted by this but some explanations later you hurry to dress up. As your guards told you it is obvious that this messenger is coming from the Balseraph - and as he states with worrying news. The war with the Dwarves is taking a toll on your troops already, so you don't want to take more if you can help it. Or even worse, lose a city. Unthinkable. Finally you have put on everything and with a dashing movement you throw over your black cloak and open the door. Time to meet this clown.

When you reach your throne chamber you take a look on the messenger from the shadows which still hide you. He is still breathing heavily, his trousers show several dirty spots and it is obvious that he is coming from the Balseraph. If not for his clownish clothes then his red nose would have given it away. A clown, if you have ever seen one. But as you take more time to investigate him, you realize some things which do not go well with "clown". The bloodied short sword - worn on his back for whatever reason he has for something this odd. It is nearly invisible as it is holing up into a blood red shirt - the most wrinkled shirt you have ever seen in your life. The black boots, leather and not the cheap one. Bear probably. The horns coming out of his forehead.
Suddenly he starts looking in your direction and then he walks up to you. You know you are detected. With a short nod of your head you have your guards stop the messenger in his ways. In the meantime you go up to your throne, sit down on it and - letting this messenger wait for several seconds before - finally declare "What is it that some 'clown' visits our beautiful city?"
When the word clown sounds, the man is looking around like he is searching something. Even after you have finished your sentence he is looking around. Without warning he burst out in a laugh and proclaims "Oh, you mean me? I am no clown dear Majesty. I am Loki!". A deep silence follow this words. Thoughts race through your head. Loki, the sneakiest bastard ever of mankind. Where he goes only chaos follows him. And... he plays with puppets.
"Clown - Loki. I don't care. What does one of the Balseraph do here? And when we are at it: Why is your sword" you inspect him closer and realize that his shirt is blood red because it is dyed with blood "and your shirt bloodied? I hope you have not slain one of my people, thinking you would be immune for diplomatic reasons!"
"I am here to bring you - war." - - - "information about the Dwarves."
"Hand it over to my advisors and then..."
"Not so fast Dear Majesty. You know this is valuable information. Information where the Dwarves have their troops and which one of course. Maybe one third to half of their total numbers. At least I think you should agree to be forthcoming when the Balseraph ask for your aid."
You think shortly about the possible implications. He does ask for cementing your bond with the Balseraph. They have shown that they can be trusted, have even put there weigh in to get several war allies against the common enemy. Having them on your side is preferable anyway and so your answer is clear.
"We are friends with the Balseraph."
"Thats enough for me. This parchment contains information on troops which are located 1N, 2NE of your troops on the desert hill in the Dwarven territory."
"Thank you - but you still haven't answered my other question."
"You mean the bloodied sword and shirt? The blood on the sword is from a bear. And the blood on the shirt..." he starts to laugh, not able to finish his sentence. Growing impatient you want to scream at him when he starts to undress the shirt. As more and more of his skin is shown the whole throne chamber grows silent. Everywhere on his body are cuts and ... marks, like from teeth. Everything is still bleeding. It has to be magic as at least some of those wounds should have healed already.
"You know Dear Majesty, never try to make a vampire a pet. Not even for Elsa, not even if she asks. But you know, when she asks friendly..." He sighs with pleasure, remembering things you cannot even imagine.
"I never knowed that vampires had the magic to let your wounds bleed forever."
"That were not the vampires Dear Majesty who did that. They only bit me some times. The unstoppable bleeding is a gift from Elsa. She gave it to me so that I would easier attract some vampires. That was really a friendly way to ask me to do it, don't you think?"

He answered but he obviously is too much into his war right now and ignored the funnier parts of the mail (well, either that or they just were not funny - pretty big possibility given that it doesn't sound right but I am not writing novels for a living nor is my English good enough to make it sound better).

Quote:-Yes. And highly efficient. And there's a lot to be valued in
efficiency isn't there? Sometimes you just have to love how everything
comes together in an efficient manner.

-But I'm afraid you bring nothing new. This army has been on the trail
of one of my raid parties for a while now. They've been armed by the
nomads giving them confidence. And they are oh so angry, absolutely
livid about the parting gift we left them. So they gather numbers and
think of cutting the wolves of from the homeland, how naive.

-We have found copper to the north, you have been passed by a settler
pack heading there. We will lead them there where Lucian awaits, we
will rearm and we will crush their hope. Without mercy.

-So you have told me no news. But the sentiment is nonetheless appreciated.

----****-----

OOC : I'm aware of this group, that's most of his capital garrison
that was chasing my biggest stack for a while and last turn most
likely diverted round the peak to cut it off. Unfortunately for him
he's most likely not aware I'm leading him towards my soon to be city
planted on a copper where Lucian and another axe will be awaiting
already. All he does right now is leading that funny warrior stack for
slaughter in 5 turns or thereabouts :]

But you're right, that is about half of his army. His GNP last few
turns was below 5, which means he has absolutely no income and only
culture left. There are three more warriors in Ithralia and 5 + a wood
golem in Mutanbo. If not for Ilios help ( copper + trade routes ) I'd
be finishing him off right now.

Interesting. To be honest, the diplomacy in this game till now was rather weird. Nobody is really talking with me and I don't know if it's me or if they all just see no reason to talk. Probably the latter but still, having neighbours which ALL do not initiate contact on their own is kinda screwing me over as I am not that good of doing that myself. Be that as it is, my answer:

Quote:Ok, good to know that you were aware of them. It certainly is a group which can wreak havoc if it comes out of the blue. I guess you have also seen that Ilios power level gone up and matches ours now. I unfortunately have no clue where he has those forces or what they do consist off but if I hear or see anything I'll let you know.
Speaking of letting you know, do you have all information about when the alliance wants to hit Ilios and who is involved in it already from uberfish or shall I update you on that as well?

Btw: I was wondering that the Elves have already declared war on Ilios this turn. Do you know why?

Quote:Only thing Ilios shown around dwarven cities was a single Acolyte of
RoK. His power growth is consistent with axe/soldiers of kilimorph
production and he has 4-5 of them. Soldiers of Kilimorph would make
more sense, as he doesn't need them now and can reuse for hammers
later.

I had the 'Tall Poppy' forwarded.

Turn 97 is fine. I will not kill off Sciz by then, with him getting
copper I do require siege or some source of collateral, but I should
be fielding horses by then so might bypass dwarves completely and do
some pillaging.

I'll tell you this though - with Ilios having s5 defenders and another
15 turns of research at his scary GNP the army mentioned in the pact
will not be nearly enough. 200H each uncoordinated and mostly warriors
will be just shrugged off. If you want a proof - my raid on Sciz ( s3
defenders ) had element of surprise and over 400h equivalent of units
and it's still dragging on. Either make people commit more, or start
working on an exit strategy to cut your loses.

And I have no idea what Uberfish is doing here, last I heard they were
miles apart, with no units near respectable borders. This war doesn't
make sense.

Quote:Ok, lets just state that now: Everything written here is confidential. If you do not want to keep it only to yourself, don't read on.

Guess that was obvious anyway, but hey, better safe then sorry, right? As for your concerns, I agree with you completely. 200H uncoordinated won't be enough. Especially one movers without collateral. At the start of this alliance we had discussions about me getting the Nilhorn Pact, that would be more then 300 hammers right there. But somehow it became obvious that uberfish doesn't want to get involved that much (you probably read those comments about "I am so far away, I would not really need to get involved"). So I guess Darrell then wanted to not invest too much either, fearing to fall behind. Well, and I guess they also feared that they are not able to produce enough troops quick enough. Honestly, I was kinda shocked when they asked for 200 hammers. I looked at my troops and thought: Well, okay, what do I do with the 100 hammers worth of troops I have already now too much?

Anyway, since then I am thinking about how to make this war work out. From Calabim and my side we will have 400 hammers at least. Coordinated as well but obviously not easy to make it working with Ilios playing in between Darrell and me. If I hit him and he has troops not killed off, he can promote them before the Calabim can hit... not that great. And troop gifting doesn't work :/ Even worse is the other side: I am not sure if Amelia even bothers to keep her side of the deal and the same goes for uberfish. So, what to do? I do have an exit strategy of course - namely Catapults. But that won't help too much in the long run. If we can't stop Ilios and his 150+ GNP then we will all be only sitting ducks.

To be completely honest: I have not only once thought about if this is the right course of action for me. Only I don't see any other unfortunately. Whatever land Ilios has - it surely did hurt all others by not being able to compete with it...

Yeah, not much to add. He said what I was pondering with already for quite some time. 200 hammers worth of units just won't cut it. I mean honestly, thats 5 Freaks...
Reply

Not much time for updates unfortunately, but in short: I am at war with Ilios this turn (T85) probably. I have razed one of his cities with Loki.

Reply

I'll make an update tomorrow. My biggest question is: How do I promote my ~70 XP adventurer -> warrior?
Reply

Ok, update-time. Diplo is getting messy as is making turn-updates, so I guess I rather make a big update about the state of the nation on T86:

Techs:

Agriculture
Calendar
Animal Husbandry
Festivals
Exploration
Crafting
Mining
Bronze Working
Masonry
Ancient Chants
Education
Code of Laws
Mysticism

Masonry is the latest addition. Currently working on Construction but at 0% for now, as I needed some money to upgrade my Adventurer and I want to stay above 100 if possible (I pretty much play like if 100 gold = 0 gold). It should be finished in 4 though. T91 I hopefully can start to work an Warfare.

Troops

I have many troops...

Demos

...enough to be first in soldiers...

Other then the soldiers, it looks rather meh. I am trying to regrow from the River of Blood worldspell but still that does not look that good. Well, I guess everyone is trying to get his civilization running away while pretending to prepare for war...

And because I am preparing for war, I am bleeding money

18 gold unit costs. And that will go even higher soon :/ What can you do? I am probably going to save the game for the others only to get smacked by them in all demos some turns later frown

Landscape

First my lands. The sign in the east stating "city" will be gone next turn and instead a city will be founded there.

And this is all I know already about the map:

Soon I will be gone around one time. I still haven't found Amelia though, but uberfish tries to set her up to meet me. I know where she is but I have no one to spare to visit her and Loki is in the north. To be exact he is the yellow point you can see up in the north-east of the map.

edit: I don't have any clue about HOW the starting spot of Sciz looked like, but god, he seems to be cramped in between several others. Not that great I guess.
