[SPOILERS] Lurkers Thread - Well someone has to do it

Yeah, you're right, there's no way Helios can build it in 4 turns without marble. Post #350 shows it building a library in four turns, and Evermore can build it in two. So a 5 turn vs 8 turn build makes perfect sense. The spider may or may not be in position to kill the workers before they hook up the marble; if the quarry is built, uberfish can't do anything about it since animals can't pillage. Fortunately for him the workers are building a farm first, but he still needs a couple more turns to get into range. I'm not familiar with quick speed improvement build times, so I don't know.

Looking at it again, if Ilios does connect the marble, he may beat uberfish - Evermore can do a library in two turns, but Hyll and Yonna need three. Evermore will build the Grand Menagerie in that intermediary turn. However, Evermore will also grow on the same turn as it builds the Menagerie (see screenshot in post 312), not to mention he has a priest who can plant a forest or two in the next few turns. Maybe that'll shave off a turn, although I think new forests don't give a hammer.

The big advantage that uberfish has is that he can see all of Ilios's cities, and has the option of cash rushing at any time once he sees the libraries go up. One of his earlier posts indicate that you can see in-progress wonders from the graphics too, is that true?

Lastly, there is likely to be massive diplomatic fallout if the spider actually attacks the workers. Barbarian spiders can't attack inside borders, and it'll be pretty obvious that uberfish is likely the only person who would do that. Not to mention, if the spider gets spotted it's still holding Barnaxus...and Ilios's army is much bigger than uberfish's at the moment. And they are bordering each other now.

I think you missed that uberfish got Writing a turn before Illos did (EOT 108 vs EOT 109), and so started building libraries a turn earlier. And 3 libraries would take him a turn less. Illos, OTOH, need one less turn to build GLib, but Illos turn-order advantage comes to play only if there's a tie. Per the total above Illos would be a turn behind (unless someone rushes, or 'random' Giant Spider attack happens).

Yeah, tracing an attack to uberfish is nigh-guaranteed (esp. if Sciz mentions uberfish has a spider). Come to think of it, attacking Ljosalfar or Calabim is a good choice for Illos right now. Sure, he's getting stronger, but so are the other two big contenders. This is a nice time for Illos to strike and set back one of his main opponents while he has military superiority and NAPs with (almost) all neighbours. Might as use that army he built for fending off the pile instead of just paying upkeep until the main opponents build their army...

Hmm, any opinions on whether Mist will jump on the Balseraphs once he realizes they're fighting the Calabim?

Looks like the Calabim or Calabrim as another un-named player likes to call them tongue are going to roll all over the Balseraph. It is a shame in a way since Serdoa has added a lot of flavour to the game, but I think he has has been the creator of his own downfall in his diplo.

Darrell probably has enough force already to march on adn should grow his core up rather than drafting more vamps imo.

Does anyone know the pop cost of drafting Vampires? If it is only one pop it would insanely overpowered to draft them instead of building them, since Vampires completely circumvent the usual Civ4 penalty to drafting by eating for experience points and the Calabim make Draft Unhappiness more palatable by (effectively) turning unhappy populace into Citizen specialists.

Even if it cost 2 pop to draft, drafting Vampires is extremely powerful.

So Darrell et al. could easily add a dozen Vamps to the pile in the next 4 turns and have them severely experienced in time for a new campaign immediately after finishing the Balseraphs. While otherwise building infrastructure in their cities. eek

It's definitely at least 2 pop as I believe that's what champions/longbowmen cost. Actually might be 3 pop for those.

I'm pretty sure it's 3 pop. And remember most of the power of Vampires comes from feasting a few quick promotions like mobility and spectres so Drafting gives you Vamps but cuts down on the feasting potential.

Currently Darrell having a whole army of 3 move vamps is going to be fun to watch when they advance.

This is definitely a much better showcase of Vampires than we've had in any other games on RB.

Actually isn't this now the ONLY showcasing of Vampires?

In other news, it looks like the Malakim are wanting to go forward with the Elves to get rid of the Dwarves. This should certainly test the Dwarven/Doviello alliance.

With the Vampire/Balseraph war only the Pirate Lanun will have freedom to grow in peace (except they are quickly running out of places to expand to)

I did a test game and the draft for Vamps is 3 pop. and 3 unhappy for 6t on quick
