Looks like the Bone Palace magic resistance bonus is about to come into play. Ilios has it in Helios, if I remember correctly.

It would be the easier and safer option. He would simply need to apply his Golden Age research overflow from Sorcery to Arcane Lore, switch to Consumption, and run 100% gold for the rest of the game, picking up Strength of Will with the Tower of Divination. If/when Darrel comes knocking, March of Trees should hold him off until he can cash rush the Tower of Mastery.
