Yeah, I have to admit that this made me chuckle.

--- The Beginning: Get HiveBent! ---
The game is afoot! Mmm...Plains Hill start. That's both good and bad, since I presume it means everyone will get the Expansive bonus on their first Worker. But the hammer bonus is nice. Wet Corn and Fish means pretty nice food, but I need Fishing. The promise of Whales later on isn't bad, but not great either. If this ends up being a Moai city though, Whales are excellent. It seems obvious to me to move the Warrior 1 down and left, which I think is SE. That just reveals the Grassland Forest you can see via tile bleed 2S of my Settler. I can't think of any reason to move my capital, since I have 2 hills for production anyway. So I settle in place... The capital of Aradia is founded. Wet Corn calls for Worker first, the hills call for Mining so it can have something to do. So Worker + Mining it is! We can see another continent right there. Is that a neighbors or will we have some island hopping to do? According to the usual methods, there are 778 land tiles in the game. Is that small for 4 players? I never really play 4 player maps. I'm thinking I should explore S before E. Agreed? Oh, also, as for my info... I'm sure you can guess the theme here =) Also, should I switch to full screen? I don't usually like to play full screen because I like to talk while playing, but if you need better pictures for it...
Since everyone else seems to be deliberating their thoughts on the opening, I guess there's more analysis I should do. Let's see...
It's definately not a production city, with only 2 hills, but with it ON a Plains Hill it's good enough for the early game. It could be a decent commerce city, given that coast and river. The wet Corn and coastal Fish means good growth, too. If we decide to build the Moai Statues here, it would be an excellent hybrid production/commerce city, especially with Beaurcracy. And those Whales with Moai should be a 3/2/3 tile, which is pretty nice. What I am more interested in is that grassland hill across the water. It's very close and Galleyable. I wonder what the mapmaker wants us to do with it. Is it another player's island? In terms of technology, I am thinking Mining -> BW -> Fishing -> Sailing. I'd rather have BW before Fishing to keep the Worker busy, but if Fishing is a fast enough tech(Say, 4-5T?) should I go for it before BW? Also, considering the players are talking about discussing their starts. I think we have non-equal starts. After all, it seems pretty obvious to Settle in place here... Couple of other alternatives - can you crop your pics to just the Civ bit before you upload them? Or use the Civ screenshot facility (printscreen button, saves them out somewhere in My Games I think, it's been a long time since I did screenies from Civ and anyway it's probably different in every version of windows).

The civ key shortcut is Shift+PrintScr . That creates a separate folder in the same place the saves are kept to dump all screens taken in JPEG format.
PrintScr alone is default Windows screen capture mechanism. Mist Wrote:The civ key shortcut is Shift+PrintScr . See, that's what my first instinct was to say - but I googled & places like CFC disagreed & said it was printscreen on its own. After read that I figured it must over-ride it so it did both windows & game screenies. I had a half-memory that shift+printscreen might do nameable screenshots but couldn't find any reference to that. I don't have civ installed any more to check tho.

I use only the printscreen key and it saves in the screenshot folder (I do play full screen, though, don't know if it makes any difference). Shift + Printscreen let you do named screenshots, just like said.
Regarding the start, I think there's a case to be done about moving inland, that's why people could be commenting. Maybe everyone started making their Great Lighthouse plans, it's another possibility. Watch out for where your opponents settle. If you have the only coastal capital, maybe a run to the GLH could be a possibility (chopping + whip overflow to speed things up), if it don't slow your expansion too much. It's certainly a strange start. Lots of water is not very common for a PBEM start, so I'd guess everyone had similar starts for balance reasons. It's a good city, but is not capital material, in my opinion. If you can find an inland site with lots of river grassland + decent food, a palace move could be in order.
As an aside, 778 seems actually rather big for a four-player map.
