[SPOILERS] Diplo2 Lurker Thread - players KEEP OUT

I have to say that this game has an interesting dynamic to it... Because all of these players have no Diplo experience (outside of spectating a few years of a single game), some interesting decisions get made. Someone with experience has a good idea for what is a "typical move" in a given situation, or what moves are realistic to expect, what messages a given move sends to other people, etc. In this game though, it's like a blank slate. Many players aren't sure what is the "norm" for a given alliance/attack/etc - so not only do we see unorthodox moves (like Germany moving in on Austria), but we also see atypical reactions to those moves. We also see someone like Bob making the mistake of not clearing Brest (would've been certain doom for Jkaen), and yes he's still probably in the 2nd-best position out of everyone (behind Russia).

It's just fun to watch because it's a lot less predictable than a normal game.

Oh, yeah, it's very entertaining. Hopefully when it's over they can break things down and see what they did right and wrong.

Yeah it would appear that they've picked up from the first game the idea that the English Channel and Black Sea should be defended at all costs (because France and Turkey went downhill very quickly after losing those sea spaces.) It'll be interesting to see what happens after Austria gets knocked out - Russia on 8 SC is quite likely to get the Civ crowd at least talking about dogpiling him before he gets out of control imo.

I'd compare it to watching inexperienced poker players. It can be entertaining but it can also become farcical.

You know, after reading peoples latest updates, I have a really hard time guessing what the hell is going to happen in this game.

England is currently friendless, and is still struggling with the basic mechanics and concepts of the game. Frankly, his only hope to do anything in this game lies in an alliance with Russia, that I doubt he even realizes can happen yet.

France seems to think hes in good with Germany, and they'll soon be headed west after England is dead. That's about the sum total of the thoughts I've seen in his thread.

Germany is playing at god knows what. Not even sure HE knows. If I had to guess, I'd say he's picked Italy as his best friend, rather than France, but I dono. Maybe he hasn't decided yet (which isn't necessarily a bad thing) The whole deal of him suddenly deciding to let Italy have Vienna is bizzare, although maybe he's finally looked at the map and realized how hard that would be to hold while he's busy in the west... Asking Russia for Sweeden is rather bold I'd say. (more on that later)

Italy... Not sure what Italy is planning either. My best guess is that he's also undecided. He's apparently convinced Germany to let him have Vienna with a nebulous "I'll let you have it later" promise I doubt he intends to keep. For the moment it doesn't look like he's thinking of going after France, at least not immediately, otherwise, who knows?

Turkey doesn't really seem to have any friends... he'd better try to make friends with Russia or Italy soon or he's going nowhere...

Russia really gets how the game works, and not just mechanics. His post fall move post virtually echoed what I was saying in many ways. Rather than being able to pick a friend, he seems to be stuck hoping that someone will actually pick him. He's realized that England might be a useful tool for him... which I don't think anyone else in the game has even thought of, not even England. He's also realized that his most dangerous foe might be... his own good play. Get too big too fast and the rest of Europe will unite to strike you down... or try to at least.

As for the diplomatic situation he's in
Gaspar Wrote:After that he hit me up and started planning a German stab in Austria. Now that's perfect for me, I can take Norway without difficulty and basically use Italy as my long-ish term ally on the continent while I play T & A off each other as I slowly dismantle Germany, which, with 3 fleets in the North and a compliant English corpse I can do easily. However, yet again TT gets other ideas and involves Germany too much... and now Commodore is offering to let TT have Austria, for what you might ask? Well, I'll tell you the only thing I think Commodore would take - assistance against Russia in the following years.

Commodore has also asked me to let him have Sweden in exchange for Norway. Clearly, he can't stop me from taking both, but I'd like a stab to have a little more vengeance than 1 scandinavian SC. I need a minute to think on this because I didn't think there was any chance that Germany would pass on Vienna, which was his entire objective in moving east, or so I thought. TT is also considering a very early stab of Turkey, so I'm going to need to see if its worth it to get Turkey onside rather than Italy. A shame if it doesn't work out, Italy as a more convenient ally.

I've nothing to add really. Should be fun to see how it plays out in a couple of days.

Well, as long as Jowy stays on Gaspar's side, Gaspar's going to be in the driver's seat; just G and I won't be enough. It's after 2000GMT...

Well that was pretty messy. TT and Commodor just failed all over themselves.

Russia has not taken into account the possibility that England and Germany might make peace with each other, in which case he is guaranteed to lose all of Scandinavia.

Yeah, that's a huge risk he probably shouldn't have taken. If England and Germany ally, he could even lose StP...

The sad part is his whole reason to do this is based on paranoia about Germany, and Germany isn't, or at least wasn't, going to threaten him imminently. He might now...

Its like watching a Gold-Level Starcraft 2 game where the only thing that makes it funny are the obs/commentators wondering what exactly is going on smile

So far the lurker thread is quite entertaining.
