Looking at that picture, I guess it would have been reasonable to move your scout S-SE. Then if you see seafood, move the settler down too. What you did was clearly inferior to that. (And of course fairly dumb compared to settling in place.)

A long exposed coastline is much easier to attack than a narrow land chokepoint. If nothing else you could have posed a credible threat, forcing LP to build more defense and focus on near you. How would that have benefitted Rego though? You seem to suggest that Rego should have thrown everything away just to take me down a notch or two. Sure, there are some players who are willing to sacrifice everything just to try to play kingmaker (you know who you are ). But at the other end of the scale there are players who won't do that - they only make moves that will actually advantage themselves, and play for their own victory. I believe that Rego is one of the latter players, and I respect him for that.
Also, for the record we were offering Rego a lot of reasons to work with us, some of which may not have even been mentioned in either of our threads yet.

No one can assimilate that much land that quickly and I would imagine that you could have help his core since it was so big. How would you give away something you couldn't offer in the first place? I'm not foolish... I recognised that my core was absolutely critical to my success, and if there was ever any danger to it, it would have been my top priority for defence. If Rego had tried to attack me there, he quickly would have been stopped and would have suffered the most losses of anyone. That he didn't attack me (especially once we already had a NAP and friendship established) made perfect sense if he was playing for his own benefit rather than someone else's.
For the record, on the flipside it also would have been insanely difficult for me to hold anything from a naval invasion of Rego, at least pre-T200. It wasn't just a one-way thing; attacking across a sea onto (effectively) a different land mass is always extremely difficult to succeed at, at least until you have a clear tech advantage.

The point was that if you were going to gamble on seafood, gamble where you would reveal 2.5 times as many tiles.
I believe, and I could be wrong, that we went S-SW (west!) with the scout as it was the only way to check BOTH water areas to see if they were coast or not.
You can't mouse over coastal tiles in the fog, can you?

Yes, this is how I feel too and I'm not sure why others don't seem to get why I'd feel that way.
Yes, I could have (maybe?) amphibiously taken out a city or two, but what woudl that have gotten me? I still had a at-best neutral and likely hostile neighbor in my south who wasn't giving me anything

I certainly don't think Rego should have thrown away everything just to slow you down- people are saying the same thing about me, and I think that's nonsense. But if Rego and Sunrise hadn't gone for the great lighthouse, this game would have been so totally different it's hard to guess what would have happened. If they had tech quickly from the start, they could have (maybe) launched an amphibious attack to take your capital and core cities. They were much closer than anyone else, at least!
But admittedly they were more threatened by Plako, early in the game, so maybe they would have just declared on him instead.

Um, let me see. Rego and us would have been at each other's throats after WK. I see Rego developing a closer relationship with LP earlier and Rego and us at a stand off for a long time :\

I'm not talking about the scout. I am saying from what you could see when you moved the settler (based on the screen you posted in this thread), there were only two possible tiles within the BFC that weren't revealed that could be seafood. But at least if you went S-SE with the settler, there were five tiles where seafood could've popped. Not sure what mousing over has to do with where you moved the settler, although I am happy to learn something new if there is a good reason for it.

Well ... I was almost sure that any attack without catapults would be stoppable - so I didn't expect you to attack for 5-10 turns ... even I was the one who pressed Mackoti to build few more units.
