It also helps if you don't try to defend your empire with units that are only about as good as warriors if you don't have iron, and which cost over twice as much. Iskender is a talented general, but there's no reason why Mardoc shouldn't be stomping all over him right now except that Mardoc's not playing well and has made the incredibly poor decision to not use his Sons (apparently not even for defense, heh).

Though I'm not sure how well zone control works in a case like this. With 4-move Divided Souls (2 moves of which ignore terrain costs) and 3-move hasted-mobility priests/tigers, Iskender can move around Mardoc's territory a lot faster than Mardoc can with his unhasted non-mobility axes! This is why I always take Mobility as a first promotion no matter what. Does Mardoc even have HBR?

Simple. Lizardmen.
They have good odds on the tigers, same as Divided Souls, are cheap, and are produced two at a time. Iskender isn't a Raider, and thus they will have same movement with proper roading.
A few extra Ritualists (preferably mobilitied), one at each entrance? And your lizardmen will have equal odds with Ghosts. And you get much more.

Yeah, even ignoring the Sons and that attacking rather than defending would have been much more beneficial for the Clan, if Mardoc had been forced to defend against Iskender I think the best option would have been about 4 lizardmen in every exposed city, huge piles of warriors defending, and a mobility-promoted stack or two of axes, ritualists, and a haste shaman.
The warriors soak up hits from PoL, Souls, and other killing units. The Lizardmen hide behind them (bronze warriors defend first) and chew through any tiger spam thrown at the city- once you get Capture Animal on them, the tiger spam is no longer a viable option for the aggressor. Response stacks are there to smash anything that ends turn in range, and with 3 moves (mobility + haste), they can also threaten an offense and force the attacker to keep some of their military back to defend.

So Hyborem is only being controlled by AI?
was that part of the game-set up, or is there a potential for someone to join as hybo now.

Originally another poster was going to join, but he had to bow out months ago, before Hybie was summoned. The game is too close to finished for anyone to take over now, plus you've just posted in the Lurker Thread & as such are spoiled :neenernee

I bet Chalid dies a within a dozen turns from a bad case of Netherblade.

Not much of a bet. The Netherblade is made for killing heroes, after all, and Iskender has a noticeably mobility advantage. Although I suppose Chalid may live longer if Iskendar finds more attractive targets in the next 12 turns.

Can anyone theorize why Iskender is ruling this game? As far as everyone knows, Sandalphon is one of the worst leaders preSareln, and the Sidar doesn't really have much to go for them, apart from Divided Souls and Wane. How did Iskender overcome this?
