Sad to see glorious France gone so soon. So building the GLH means one has to use the extra commerce to build a good Army
[SPOILERS] MNG as Hattie of France

Gaspar Wrote:Sorry to hear the game isn't turning out so well for you, MNG. I thought you played a quality open, which unfortunately hurt you diplomatically. People treat GLH as though you've just launched a spaceship, and I don't think its nearly that powerful. Still, glad you had a good time. That's exactly it - the GLH is nice, but not the intimidation it generates is not justified. The only question I have left unanswered is whether I would do the same in their position. Is the right move to start/join a coalition against the holder of the GLH, and hide my own relative strength behind the coalition? I'm about 10 days behind on your thread but I'd be interested to hear what you think, since you have shared my shoes to an extent.
You can get a look at a t-bone by looking up the bulls ass but I'd rather take the butcher's word for it.

Mr. Nice Guy Wrote:That's exactly it - the GLH is nice, but not the intimidation it generates is not justified. Well, my game is awfully different. For one I built GLH much later, so its less of a bullseye, and for another, without delving into spoilers, PBEM14 has a very unique geopolitical situation, which meant one or two plays by me wasn't going to turn the game on its head. I can't really say anything else about your game without spoilers, other than to say good luck.
I've got some dirt on my shoulder, can you brush it off for me?
I am now down to 2 cities. Chartres will fall to Commodore on his next turn, and Lyons which will hang around for a few more turns. I've spent the last few turns pillaging the northern half of my empire back to the stone age. Only my road network remains. RL7 timed this war right, brought the right number of force, and did a great job. I can't let him walk away with the game, so that's why I've burned so many tiles. The way I see it now, at T105, the power ranking is:
1. RL7 2. GES ---Gap--- 3. Commodore 4. Yuri RL7 has a flaw, in that his conquests are going to be costly on this map. And having no improvements at all in 3 of them won't help. I'm heavily rooting for Commodore. Geography made it impossible for us to ally in this game, but I have nothing but positive things to say about him and hope he can eliminate that gap and even win this thing. It's going to get crazy really soon, that much is for sure. With Astronomy in, everyone borders everyone else. I could easily see Commodore taking Yuri's western cities. But then he's vulnerable to RL7 at what was mine and yuri's border. Of course, I could just as easily see RL7 attacking Yuri from two fronts. Possession of those cities could well become very important. We'll see. I can't wait to watch it playout, from the sidelines. I guess it's worth noting that I learned a couple of basics during this game: *Guard front cities more effectively. *Plan for, and understand how to maximize whatever early game advantages I've earned. In this game, through T70 I expanded very well and built up very well. Had I taken the time to consolidate my gains I would never have been put into the situations I faced in the last 1/3rd of my game. *In my league, reading demos isn't as crucial as the pros make it appear. Reading and understanding international diplomacy is. A lot of this is due to a (personally) busy couple of weeks taking my focus off the game. But I should have seen RL7's attack coming a mile away and been prepared for it 100%. *Forest chops really are as powerful as the pros make them appear. All of my early success was the result of (effective) forest chops. I have current map intel on Yuri, who I consider to be in 4th right now, and he still has 3 forests unchopped at his capital. I played around with forest chops in PB3, but I get it 100% now, and I just hope I don't forget. And last but not least.... *If you're going to pink dot someone, be prepared to back it up with force non-stop.

One more point I want to make, for when the game is finally over, if anyone else cares to cruise my little thread:
A big thank you and well played to all of the other players in the game. Having read and been involved in other games in the past, I'm proud to say that PBEM19 was by far the most cordial game on RB to date, and its pace will be tough to beat in the future. I hope that between now and the game's end, the trend continues, and I really do look forward to my next chance to interact with the cast of characters from this game.

Mr. Nice Guy Wrote:Time to start thinking about the enemy. We'll start with Commodore, Darius (Fin/Org) of HRE (Mysticism/Hunting; Landskencht; Rathaus) Now this is a great thread, and Imma let you finish, but...

In all seriousness, thanks for the awesome game, MNG, it truly was a pleasure. You've been nothing but a class act from start to finish, and I truly appreciated all of our dealings. I know you liked the picture of my lands, so I thought you'd be a fan of this, consider it a gift for being awesome:
It will never be Malinese!
