Turn 127

Anybody want to guess why Rego is posting about banning diplomatic victories? Perhaps it has something to do with this:

So did I do it? Did I not do it and tell Rego I did it? Or did I just play it boring?

Speaking of Rego, he's going to be getting some jannisaries:

He's still catching me in population, even with the drafting. Of course, I have three cities dedicated to running specialists, so that isn't helping my growth any. I settled my 29th city this turn: RFC (stands for the Reconstruction Finance Corporation). I'll have a buddhist missionary in it next turn. Or not, I may give it to PRRA.

Speaking of population, the world looks like this at the end of turn:

Me: 228 Pop, 29 cities
Regoarrarr: 223 Pop, 26 cities
Gaspadore: 156 Pop, 29 cities
Yuris125: 134 Pop, 16 cities

Also happening at end of turn: oxford. We have almost 1200 gold saved up; time to start another golden age.

Hey, we snuck in another turn. I'm going to bed, so we'll do the turn report along with the next turn, but as promised I kicked off a golden age and switched civics to Theology & Nationalism, then cranked the slider to 100%.

Guess how high my bpt was before ending the turn smile

Turns 129, 130, & 131

I've grabbed Economics, Constitution, and Corporation over the last 3 turns. When I finish my stretch of drafting I'll revolt to Representation & Free Market. I was going to grab Constitution first, but it didn't really matter, and on top of it Yuri looked like he was making a run for the Great Merchant at Econ himself, teching Banking and Paper in 2 consecutive turns.

Gaspadore picked up Scientific Method this turn. He's either going for Communism or Physics - I bet it's Communism. Rego will get Communism next turn, and then we'll get to see whether State Property outdoes Free Market once and for all smile

Right now the difficulty has been to sort out my drafting; I've drafted a few from low-growth towns this last turn, but maybe it's better to just double up on the unhappiness from faster growing cities.

Also, I found out something that was very disappointing:

My first 2xp galleon off the line. I was planning on upgrading this to Nav2, because the only documentation I found said that Nav2 only requires Nav1. Well, it's wrong. My galleon with Nav1 cannot upgrade without Flanking1 first, it appears. So I postponed my big galleon push; I'll do that after steel and drydocks instead.

Nothing too big. I'll settle 2 cities in 2 more turns, and then another 2 cities about 4 or 5 turns later. And then I will be out of places to settle.

The end of Turn 131, I got my next great person:

Finally a scientist! So right now i have 1 of Scientist, Artist, Engineer, and Merchant. The Engineer is for Mining, Inc. In 4 turns I'll have another great person out of the capital (yay for wonders!), but that has about equal odds of Artist & Priest (boo wonders!). So I'll either be using an Artist & Merchant or an Aritist & Priest to trigger my 3rd golden age.

I'm trying to think if I should bulb the scientist or keep it around for a 4th golden age. Right now I'm leaning towards a 4th: bulbing will get me about 1246 beakers next turn, but a GA is worth approximately ([breakeven bpt in GA] - [breakeven bpt normally]) / # of GPs needed * 9 turns.

Speaking of bpt, it went up by about 170 thanks to the additional trade route. Yay for corporations.

Always go with what the Civilopedia says, for the information that's available in it. The data that's pulled from the files anyway, the text blocks can be incorrect.

Turn 132

Rego got communism, and Gaspadore is now up to 31 cities. I envy both accomplishments but i don't know if i'd trade spots with either one. Kremlin is going to be big for Rego, but i think I'm guaranteed Mining, Inc. Rego wanted to let me know that we were racing for it, but i don't see how he has a chance. I should be able to one-turn every tech from here to Railroad.

I'm a little ashamed of this next part, but it made sense. I didn't micro out FAP any further than making the next bank (to get my 7 required for Wall Street) -- in fact, i've largely stopped microing at all, save for how to best get new cities up and running -- so this turn when i saw how much overflow i was getting i realized there weren't many options that were good builds and also didn't waste hammers because of excessive overflow.

So i built ToA -- in one turn. It's a bit telling that a Custom House would have taken 2 turns to build, but i could do ToA in one. Anyway, i didn't do it for the trade route bonus. I did it for the 5 base gp pts. But maybe an aqueduct would have been a better choice.

In research i grabbed Alphabet. Printing Press is next turn, and then i'll finish up the golden age with Engineering, Gunpowder, & Chemistry.

Turn 133

People have been talking...

Quote:Rego: maybe
he was chatting with me a bit today
spinning me a pretty good story about where this game is heading

me: oh?

Rego: he and i fight
you swallow yuri
then we fight eventually
at tech parity
but you have better producation and faster ships

me: possibly. but you're going to have about 15 - 20 turns headstart on gaspadore's land over mine
especially if i'm helping you take him out

Rego: depends on how much of a fight he puts up

Well, if I had to read between the lines I would have to think Rego is almost talking about walking out of our alliance. I need to keep an eye on him; I don't think he would break our NAP, but then again, this is Rego we're talking about. He may start looking back on the Taj incident as rational to do what he wants.

I tried to encourage him that the Kremlin is going to be a big boost to production. Tell me if I'm wrong, but isn't the Kremlin bonus multiplicative with other production bonuses? So whips will be 30h * bonuses instead of 20h. In this map that should be a big bonus. As big a bonus as Mining, Inc? I dunno. But i don't think Creative Constructions is that big a drop-off for 2nd prize, at least not with the resources I have available now.

Speaking of Rego, he fired off a Golden Age this turn and swapped civics! This is a screenshot from after the turn ended, so some things are getting a little ahead of the story:

And yes, I changed my civics too! This was the last turn of drafting, so I'm now sitting on an army of 37 berserkers. Upgrade material; I don't have to produce many more ground forces for a while. Instead I'll be working on galleons and the odd longbow or two.

The change in civics had a pretty noticeable impact on my commerce. I circled what my bpt showed after ending the turn, but I think my haul last turn was only around 1800bpt. Printing Press helped kick it up over 1900.

My break-even rate after changing civics is somewhere around 1500bpt. We'll have a number of banks finishing next turn, and that should help the break-even rate a bit more.

I settled two new cities this turn. SEC is on the mainland, beside the iron. It'll will steal FDIC's fish for growth, but right now it's working the iron to get a lighthouse up and running. I thought I grabbed a screenshot of it, but I guess I missed it. I did get a screenshot of the other new city, SSA:

I timed a forest chop and a missionary to both come in the turn in was founded. There's a work boat coming south from HOLC, and that will reach the fish right as the border's pop. So good timing all around.

And lastly, NIRA got a little better:

I gained control of the purple tile this last turn. But Yuri is 4 turns away from Sistine, so I may not be able to keep it.

Next turn I'll have some graphs, so we can compare Rego & I while we're both in a golden age.

I can't answer your Kremlin mechanics question, or the relative value of the corps. I want to see the corps founded just because they're so rare here on RB.

Little touches like timed chops and missions are great, nice job keeping that up past the medievel age!

Thanks! A lot of that was serendipity too. I realized I wanted to settle that area, but i didn't want to settle it without a missionary on the spot to help it pop borders or a chopped lighthouse so it can work 2f tiles right away. And then when I tried to figure out what I had in the area everything just lined up. As Sullla would say, sometimes it's better to be lucky than good! jive

You're basically right about the Kremlin, though there are maybe some rounding issues so it's a tiny bit less than 30h/pop. Best estimate I get is you take e.g. 20h * 1.25 (forge) / .67 (Kremlin) = 37. But I haven't yet figured out exactly when builds change e.g. from a 2whip to a 1whip; I think it might be mildly buggy there with the rounding (like maybe if there's exactly 37h left it will still do a 2whip).
Reply

Awesome! Rego told me he's already started building the Kremlin, so I wouldn't be surprised if he makes up a lot of that production gap with whips. If I were him, I'd aim for Radio and Cristo Redento (after getting the war techs), so he can make the most out of whipping cycles while still running caste & communism. That would get him the most production (if he decides not to go for corporations).

Of course, I'd like to get Cristo myself, but that is a long ways away with my tech plan.

Since that last chat we had last night seemed less than encouraging -- why am i getting this feeling he is considering a stab at this moment? -- and since there isn't a turn to play, I sent him off this email:

Quote:[COLOR="Plum"]Hey Rego,

I've been thinking about our last conversation and I wanted to reiterate that I'm entirely committed to helping you take down Gaspadore when you choose to attack. I don't think this is a great "strategic" decision on my part, because you are obviously going to get a large part of the spoils in any division of Gaspadore land. But I also remember what you said before about this game and about our alliance: that you would like to see us be able to duke it out at a relatively even position. I think fighting Gaspadore puts us solidly on that path. A lot of my production advantage is going to dissolve with Sci Meth (i don't recall my exact monestary count but it is around 20), and you will grab a good chunk of gaspadore's lands to help bolster yours.

We both know Gaspadore is trying to get us to fight while he techs away, which is what we both would be trying to do in his position. But you're going to be the eventual winner there when you grab Sian's old core and most of his lands. I'm looking forward to coordinating the war against Gaspadore with you and showing some serious fireworks. Speaking of which, when do you want to start talking about details of invasion? I've been thinking I'll primarily focus on naval forces in this war: wipe out his navy and clear the path for invading with drafted units, but I'm open to changing that if you would want to coordinate otherwise.

This may be counting our chickens before they hatch, but we can also set down a cooldown procedure for when we eliminate Gaspadore & Yuri. I'm open to also racing for space, but it would be fun to try some modern warfare as well.

Keep fighting; this game is far from decided.

And for context, here's the full chat from last night:
Regoarrarr: hey there

Me: hi

Regoarrarr: nother turn today

Me: are we setting some kind of record for turn pace?

Regoarrarr: probably
any land last turn?
i saw i got 3 pts

Me: yeah, yuri lost 4 pts
and i got 11 pts

Regoarrarr: yeah i was about to say
and 1 pop, alpha and toa

Me: had to open the sheet up smile
wasnt planning on toa
but i had too much overflow, i would have lost hammers with anything else

Regoarrarr: yeah sounds like an AWFUL problem you're having

Me: well... i could have built a custom house....

Regoarrarr: mr. 3 times everyone else's prod

Me: smile it presents its own unique challenges
did you know you're now 10k beakers up on me? it's like i'm not even in a golden age
Regoarrarr: i'm sorry that's only 9682 beakers

Me: oh, i guess that's ok then smile

Regoarrarr: you gotta stop dorking around with 300b techs
i assume PP next turn?

Me: yeah
trying to decide what's after PP, probably chemo

Regoarrarr: so can't figure out gasp and education

Me: communism maybe?
he's going econ at a bad time to go econ
maybe he sees our power ratings shooting up and thinks we're gonna fight tongue

Regoarrarr: maybe
he was chatting with me a bit today
spinning me a pretty good story about where this game is heading

Me: oh?

Regoarrarr: he and i fight
you swallow yuri
then we fight eventually
at tech parity
but you have better producation and faster ships

Me: possibly. but you're going to have about 15 - 20 turns headstart on gaspadore's land over mine
especially if i'm helping you take him out

Regoarrarr: depends on how much of a fight he puts up

Me: you are going to get kremlin, right?
that's a production booster

Regoarrarr: yeah

Me: what does that do exactly with whips btw? does it change the base amount whipped, or is the multiplier additive with any production bonuses?

Regoarrarr: yeah i'm not sure

Me: trying to find it in civfanatics

Regoarrarr: whats' yuri's eta on sistsine?

Me: lemme open last turn's save
it shows 5 turns, but he had his turn next so 4 more of his turns

Regoarrarr: ok

Me: he might be able to squeeze a turn off it

Regoarrarr: yeah
i wasn't going to steal
just maybe put some hammers into it

Me: cool, that's a smart idea
heh, if i had music that probably would have been better than ToA tongue

Regoarrarr: smile

Me: ok, civfanatics isn't helping

Regoarrarr: where's sevenspirits when you need him

Me: or t-hawk
i'm going to try digging xml but i don't know it well

(8 minutes)

Regoarrarr: you gonna build angkor wat?

Me: no, not planning on it

Regoarrarr: chicen itza? smile
notre dame?

Me: well, if i run out of things to build, i may try to stack them in my Moai city for the GP points
or capital
right now that isn't the plan, but if i think of it i will give you a heads up for fail gold

Regoarrarr: thanks
save otw

Me: it looks like the kremlin bonus is multiplicative with production bonuses

Regoarrarr: hm

Me: fyi
quick speed, a city with a forge and kremlin was getting 37h per pop
so build it before i get theredon't worry, i think you have some time still! wink

Regoarrarr: already started it

Me: nice
too bad sian didn't make it

Regoarrarr: yeah

Me: i would have liked to see aztecs with kremlin
just to see the potential
banking for you?

Regoarrarr: y
i was going oto go RP next
but now i'm thinking about steel

Me: i would do steel
that's where i'm leaning to go after chemistry
but rifles are a good idea too
gasp is really growing lately

Regoarrarr: yeah

Me: 21 pop in the last 4 turns

Regoarrarr: yeah
k i'm gonna sign off

Me: k, have a good night

Wasn't it around 20 turns ago he was telling me how he felt bad that he was going to run away from the game and we wouldn't be able to fight an evenly matched modern war? And now he thinks I'm going to run away. I don't think I'm a run-away at all, but I would count myself as being ahead. Just like he wasn't a run-away 20 turns ago, but he was close to one. And I picked Vikings specifically for the ship movement; I'm not going to apologize for that.

With the email I'm trying to reaffirm commitment to the Gaspadore war, and show how it will benefit him. And it will benefit him more than me. There are 4 or 5 cities near to me that Gaspadore has, although I will try to take more than that.

Still, it probably is prudent to add a few more defenders in my core cities. And a lot more ships.
