Simultaneous pitboss idea (for later)

I don't think we can handle another large game right now but I thought I'd post this for discussion anyway.

Pitboss games have this problem where timing is meaningful. You can legislate turn splits but then it gets messy. I have an idea about this.

Everyone gets grouped into "A" or "B". As play in the first half of the turn, Bs play only in the second half. When an A and a B make contact they must immediately declare war on each other. As may never declare war on other As, and Bs may never declare war on other Bs.

Therefore no one may ever move at the same time that someone they're at war with may move. This limits turnplaying races to settling races between peaceful players and potentially races to be the guy who gets to kill a vulnerable enemy, which is inconsequential enough that no further rules are needed.

At the same time it's a potentially interesting variant, essentially bringing the Permanent War or Peace game setting to MP.

War weariness would be a pain.

Yep. Probably would be best to do this with a mod that either allows Permanent War or Peace to work in MP (which I don't think it does) or that just lets WW recede while at war.

A lot would depend on the map...and because it would require a mod to alleviate the WW, going to need a new host...

Sounds like mostly the same thing as sequential Pitboss with teams. PB6 with two sides instead of four. Only difference is the players are playing for themselves instead of teamed.

You still need rules to handle the asymmetry of turn sequence. The A players can suffer disconnected resources and pillaged and occupied tiles by the B players with no chance to respond. B players can react to an invasion and whip a defender to appear immediately; A players see an extra turn delay. These concerns aren't insurmountable, but there will always be arguments over the details.

Let's see how inconsequential this is when two players are both on the doorstep of capturing the Pyramids.

Why wouldn't Permanent War or Peace work in MP?

Imbalances don't matter that much as long as they both give comparable advantages and will lead to diverging play styles. I like that.

Maybe not wink I actually think I'm going to have a second dedicated server PC in the very near future. It may not matter if all mods force port 2057 or whatever, but I think what they really do is force the native BtS port. So a second BtS on a second machine with the default port changed should work, right?
