RBP7 - SPOILERS - Genghis Khan of Egypt

Just checking in to say I'm not dead. I'll try to get some pictures up soon. Here's an overview of what's happening:

*I've swapped into Confucianism and will have ivory next turn. That means +2 happy in most of my cities, or a limit of 9 in my capital and 8 elsewhere. Most of my cities aren't there yet, though Luxor, Wynncore, and Venlazzo are getting close. 5/7 cities have my religion, but The Palms has a monastery online and is working on the two needed missionaries.

*Settling so many cities has started to hurt my research rate, currently only a slight profit at 60%. I've called a moratorium on new cities until it can, hopefully, get to 80%.

*I'm also finishing an axe I have in the pipeline and then stopping building military for a while. I'm top power and have a comfortable margin over my neighbors. Any border city can be covered by multiple modern units with 1t of signs of attack. I couldn't hold versus 10 chariots, but nothing suggests my neighbors are building such stacks. Instead I'm building some libraries, a few more workers, and lighthouses in my coastals.

*The above three points have determined my next tech: Currency. I'm heading to it via binary research, and it should be about 9t more (or 11t overall considering the 2t I've spent stockpiling gold already). Yes my research rate took a hit frown

*My GProphet is due at 11t.

*I've spotted pindicator's city to my immediate southeast, and I've asked him about borders. Ideally, but without fighting, I'd like to get 2 cities to the east of Wynncore and above his city. Those two, plus one city on my southern coast and one city for the jungle bananas to my northwest would mean 11 peaceful cities. Open question as to whether that will be competitive with what the neighbor killers get.

*I'm #3 in GNP (#2 at 100% science), #8 in production, a very close #2 in food, #1 in power, #2 in land area, and #1 in pop. I don't expect to get passed in (demographic) pop very soon. And thanks to darrell's workers I'm only working 2 unimproved tiles empire wide smile

*I'll have horses hooked in 3t. Notwithstanding the above I will probably attack Rome if the opportunity presents itself. Meaning if I finish slowbuilding the workers and libraries I'm on now, and if I don't need more units elsewhere, and if Rome's power stays low. That's something to consider in 10t though.

Thanks to China's crazy whipping...

That's more like it wink

Of course technically that GNP is at a deficit. I'm positive cashflow but in 2nd place at 60%, so I'll call that a tie.

Now as for the crazy whipping itself...

*They could be invading me. That would be annoying and hurt, but probably hurt them more.

*They could be invading their other neighbor or defending from same. That's ideal so long as neither side is too effective.

*They could be whipping multiple settlers to claim our border area since I now have a scout around there. That would be bad for me, but I'm not sure their economy could handle the shock.

*Or they could be doing something comparatively boring like slaving libraries after just picking up the tech.

Non-mechanics question, so ignore if the lurker thread whip is too powerful:

Is it generally better to improve and work non-river grassland cottages or river plains cottages? Obviously grassland > plains and river > non-river, but I'm not sure about this combination. I suspect long-term all grassland and all river tiles are worth working if you have the happiness, but I'm unsure of the order...

Depend on the good and happy cap situation, but generally the grassland is better if you have a granary.

Nonriver grassland cottages, then grassland hill mines, then plains river cottages or farms. A Bureaucracy capital can be an exception to work a plains cottage ahead of a grass mine, if it already has decent hammers from a cow or metal resource.

Man I love my grassland hill mines...you're bursting my bubble T-Hawk frown. I'm pretty sure at size 7 they outstrip even Farms for production. I guess my hammers::commerce conversion factor is different than yours.

Thanks guys. Let me see if I have this right:

*Most special tiles (yes sometimes there's like 0/0/5 tiles but those are pretty rare)
*Floodplains
*River grasslands
*Nonriver grasslands
*River grassland hills

*Nonriver grassland hills
*Coast
*River plains
*Nonriver plains
*River plains hills
*Ocean
*Nonriver plains hills

Does that seem right? I took a stab at adding in the water tiles and the plain hills, but I'm actually most interested in whether river grassland hills trump nonriver grassland cottages or not.

Nonriver plains being better than river plains hill seems off to me. Could be wrong though. It's just that I treat Nonriver plains to be pretty much desert but I definitely work ph mines occasionally.

It depends on too many other variables for a standard list to really be produced. That list looks vaguely right for something like a high happy cap, high food, excess of worker turns, and Non-FIN empire without Collosus for example. And it ignores the needs of each individual city and the overall needs of the empire.

So if I'm hearing you right you're saying I have the perfect template for all possible settings and situations! :neenernee

No, because that template doesn't work if any one of those variables changes, and doesn't take into account other stuff either.
