Arch Alliance Name Brainstorm Thread

Now that the new alliance is looking set to go ahead, it would be a good time to get the brainstorming on potential alliance names. By setting up a phantom guild to act as the alliance leader we get the option to call it just about anything we want while still retaining the individual names of all of the contributing guilds. Anyway, I'll kick off some discussion by listing whatever name ideas we can come up with and edit in the new names as they arise. Reply posts would be a good place to present new ideas, comments on already listed ideas and most importantly explanations of naming ideas.

Beyond Ascension[BA] - [BOnd]

This was a contribution from Sciros, but I'd also like to comment on it myself. This name has both an advantage and a disadvantage in carrying the names of two founding guilds. The downside is that it edges out the idea of being an alliance of equals a little in the eyes of some people who might see it as pushing two guilds to a position of prominence. The advantage is that any other name we might find for ourselves might coincidentally resemble a name of a future allied guild where "Beyond Ascension" would otherwise lock them out of the same kind of situation.

I took the liberty of adding a couple of tag ideas. The tag [BA] was a relatively dull and obvious choice. I also experimented by putting in the closest approximation of B-Ond I could get and only realized after the fact that it spelled "Bond," which turned out to be a neat coincidence in that that is the only thing the guild exists for (to be the bond between guilds). Two obvious downsides are that [BOnd] picks up the Realms Beyond side of the alliance and it might get us mistaken for 007 fans or something.


Circle of Equals[cOe]

The "circle of equals" is something I encountered with my BattleTech obsession. The term refers to an impromptu arena - a room, a courtyard or a ring of onlookers - where two Clan warriors can duel to settle a difference. The BattleTech connotations don't suit us all, but the name alone fits the idea that we're trying to pull off here.

For a tag I used lower case "c" and "e" straddling a larger, circular "O".


Order Of Nine[IX] and Order Of The Nine[IX]

The same name either way, the order is like "Zaishen Order" or "Order of the Sunspears" and the "Nine" is a reference to how many guilds our alliance can effectively accommodate after the phantom guild is discounted. Who wants to be a Legionnaire?

I chose a roman numeral representation of 9 for the tag suggestion.


The Rogue Legion[TRL] - [Legn]

Somewhere along the line Alien Legion popped into my head. For those who don't know it's a comicbook series from the 80's featuring a wide range of intergalactic misfits who come together for mutual benefit. The idea there was basically the French Foreign Legion in space and in a way the idea of a Foreign Legion in Guild Wars kind of fits what we're trying to pull off here. "Rogue" was just a suitable word tacked on the front and maybe there's a better substitute.

Most people don't like KoP's sense of humor, so a new guild would be formed with an appropriate name when it is agreed upon.

I don't like "Order of Nine" because it would seem to encourage us to grow to 9 guilds, and I would rather have a slower allying process than what ZoS used, plus I do not mind staying small. Part of what makes the current ally chat so forboding is that it's so big IMO.

The leading guild is the alliance name, And coming up with a name we can live with is the topic of this thread.

I don't fully uderstand the second part of your question, can you elaborate on that?

I think there are few alliances out there that can legitimately call themselves "nine" of anything, because there are few good, full alliances (except the faction farming ones). Even ZoS could really never call itself an "order of nine" legitimately. So, while it has a nice ring to it, to me it is
a) kinda wishful thinking, at least for a while (we can always reform into an order of the nine if it becomes one Razz)
b) totally sounds like it's from Oblivion, because they have an expansion called "Knights of the Nine" where you form an "Order of the Nine" so... yeah.

Regarding "Beyond Ascension" and the "Nine" names -- they have the bothersome disadvantage of, if Googled, returning a lot of results, and none being Guild Wars-ish. If you Google "Archons Ascendant" you end up with only us. With "Realms Beyond," you get a lot more results, but indeed the Guild Wars guild is way at the top. So, that may also be something we need to consider...

Well, I like Alliance of Equals and Circle of Equals as potential names. I think I'd suggest the tag [AoE] if we went for the former, though. Just cause we hope to inspire others to seek legit challenge - thus, the Area of Effect implication wouldn't be bad.

I've been trying to come up with other possibilities, but they're all rather lame. However, I'll throw them out there in the hope that they might inspire someone else more creative. Most of my thinking was along the lines of how to indicate Equality - a perusal of the online thesaurus yielded some reasonable synonyms, which gave me:

Acolytes of the Balance [AoB] (or maybe Defenders of the Balance)

Seekers of Symmetry [SoS] <-- maybe that's not the best tag!

Paladins of Parity [PoP]

Yes, those are lame. The other idea that I was trying to indicate was the idea of the guilds in the alliance all rotating through the leadership - assuming that each member guild has a few folks in the Phantom Figurehead Guild, and those would take turns:

Chilled Peers [CP] <-- gets across two ideas: (1) we're all "chilled out," totally lacking in the Drive for Drama; (2) all the guilds are peers, i.e., equal to each other. But really it was inspired by an entry on the cafeteria menu at my sons' school: chilled pears, of course.
