I just had an epiphany.

We're seeing a stage of the Tour De France play out in slow-mo here.

The big peloton full of "favorites" has no problem letting a couple riders get a huge lead (sometimes 10 miles!) because they feel secure in chasing them down at the end with power in numbers. Usually the bigger group succeeds.

Sometimes when the breakaways put their hearts into it, the team managers wait too long to push the "go" button... the peloton starts working really really hard to catch up (like 35mph+ on the flats) but the breakaways still win.

Sullla Bruyneel anyone?

I've got some dirt on my shoulder, can you brush it off for me?

Yes. For example when that american cheated and got forfieted it was pretty big in the media. Not much though...

ASM made a micro mistake by saying he needs to play after lewwyn giving other teams more information than needed. Does'nt matter though.

This turn is when we get to see if lewwyn gets that artist. If they do this game is over. Team 3 can only get one attack in at best and that is not going to be enough.

ASM has been making micro mistakes for the past several turns. If team 2 cleans up the micro they can probably win before any armies can reach the culture cities. Not getting the artist so that team 2 is inspired to go into golden age starvation mode may actually shave off more turns.

Not sure why everyone is so convinced about the recent micro mistakes though, since I don't see enough information anywhere to draw those conclusions?

And it's always heartbreaking when they catch 'em 5km from the finish. smile

The analogy only fits for T3 here, though. T1 doesn't realize there's even a finish line...

Basically, if you aren't following Commadore's (highly entertaining) writeup from PBEM24 and murdering most of your citizenry in starving artist death camps as you get close to the end you are doing it wrong.

When it's time to reach a cultural victory, you throw every single worker into a death camp where they are under orders to draw 24/7 a day, no wages, no food. Sure, the city might turn unhappy, but at least it'll be beautiful!

And if the city can't produce a great artist in time to matter, every last man jack trades in their paint brushes for abacuses and goes off to the grand emporium of death to buy and sell around the clock and ensure you can keep the culture slider up!

Sure there are some subtleties, but there are a lot of tricks to shave turns in the end stages of culture wins. I remember some good threads on the topic in the CivFanatics HOF section years and years ago. This thread is a good start: http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=298093

Off and on. Hearing a Tipperary man talk knowledgably about technical aspects of bicycles always gets to me (Sean Kelly on Eurosport), for some reason.
