Does that XCom game count as 4X?

That was deliberately following davy's thinking to avoid spoilers. He didn't actually think that.

Oh and guys, Thoth and I came into this game late. We knew we didn't have a real chance of winning. Our objective was clear: Do as much damage as possible.
So, we did know of the culture victory that T2 was going for and I personally was kind of cheering for them. Stealing victory from the big boys and all that. xD

Sorry guys, it doesn't quite work that way. I wish I could read Team 2's thread right now...

We lurkers weren't sure whether that was intentional or more like accidentally tripping them.

Just curious: If in an alternate universe you had put forth a concerted effort to stop the CV, do you think it would've worked or just been wasted effort?

Well, actually. No, we didn't really know what we were doing in that manner. I just wanted Hoofington back. :P
Soo, I guess Thoth should come in and answer, but my own view is we accidentally tripped them.

We weren't deliberately tripping up Team 3. As nabaxo said, we wanted our city back.
Had Team 3 not invaded us, those troops were slated to head East and South to annoy Team 2 and Team 1. As things turned out we were forced to commit more troops to the defense of Equestria than we wanted to. Initially we had to hold off Team 3's invasion (which could have caused us some serious damage if we'd ignored it in favour of attacking Team 1 or 2), and then we had to build up enough force to retake Hoofington, so there was very little left that we could have waged offensive war with against anyone else.

If we'd twigged as to just how fast the CV was going to be and Team 3 hadn't invaded us we might have been able to do something, but I doubt it. We simply didn't have the production ability to both defend our homelands and go on a civ killing offensive, so any attack would have been of the "grab a city or two and dig in" type rather than the "charge for the capital and burn it" type needed to stop the CV.
And even if we had been able to stop the CV (which is unlikely) we'd have just handed the win to Team 3 or Team 1 after another couple of months of playing a game that I never had much interest in. nabaxo and I never actually discussed it, but I was content to let Team 2 win their CV if they could pull it off.
I didn't think they had much chance of it and certainly didn't think they could do it as quickly as they did.
Very well done Team 2. You've managed to throw the conventional wisdom that "CV's can't be done in MP" out the window. :hat:
