Buying a new Computer - Q&A

I just got a phone call from IBP and they said my mother board doesn't have enough grandpa (well - that is what the VM sounded like). They were talking about me upgrading to 16Gb.

Motherboard ([SLI] ASUS P8Z77-V LK -- 2x PCI-E 3.0 x16, 4x USB 3.0))

What???
I have finally decided to put down some cash and register a website. It is www.ruffhi.com. Now I remain free to move the hosting options without having to change the name of the site.

Are they saying your motherboard only has space for two RAM sticks and thus you can't fit 4x4GB RAM into it?

I find it hard to believe that a board with support for SLI wouldn't have four memory slots though.

Or it could have been 'not enough power'? Anyway, I will find out tomorrow when I ring them.

It looks like it has enough memory slots ...

Given the context "grandpa" could be "RAM power". But I've no idea what they'd actually mean by that - in terms of routing sufficient power to the slots for the RAM I'd've thought that if the mobo says it'll take it then it'll take it. Alternatively, they may mean that you should be putting 16Gb in, not knowing you're buying it from elsewhere?

Could be RAMpower. I did include a note on my order that I was going to install 16Gb of ram (supplied link to product). My wording was a bit sloppy and they took it to mean 'add' and not 'replace' - thus they are thinking that I would end up with 20Gb of ram.

They may have been confused about whether you would be running your memory in dual channel or not. If, for instance, they should you meant you were going with uneven memory sizes or populating three slots rather than four.

Alternately, seeing you were using 16gigs, they may have been trying to up-sell you on a higher end tri-channel board for more memory bandwidth (not needed).

I spoke to the sales rep and mentioned the 'grandpa' comment - she didn't know what I was talking about. However, there was some confusion about me 'adding' memory instead of 'replacing' memory ... she said that there wasn't enough ram slots ... ram slots ... grandpa ... listening to the message again, she swallows the 'slo' and it sounds like grandpa. Weird.

Anyway - order processed, off to the 'gathering parts' part. 16Gb of memory turned up on the mail ... have to wait 10 working days for PC to turn up ... sigh.

Congratulations!

1 x Memory (4 GB [2 GB X2] DDR3-1600 Memory Module - Corsair or Major Brand))
So 4G or 16G? Also, don't forget to check the bios for the 1600, it may run at 1333.

1 x Processor (Intel® Core™ i5-2500 Processor (4x 3.30GHz/6MB L3 Cache)))
1 x Processor Cooling (Corsair Hydro Series H60 Liquid CPU Cooling System - ARC Dual Silent High Performance Fan Upgrade (Push-Pull Airflow)))
1 x Motherboard ([SLI] ASUS P8Z77-V LK -- 2x PCI-E 3.0 x16, 4x USB 3.0))
The CPU + MB can overclock abit. Liquid cooling, nice!

Congratulations!

Wait, did you end up with a non-K series processor? No problem, but then I assume, contra flug-auto above, that you chose that CPU cooler for noise rather than cooling.

yes - non-K. I think someone (you?) mentioned that it can act as a video card backup. The PC sits in my shared office (with wife) and noise and heat are issues.
