The Olympics

Exactly scooter!

Also, NBC has this nice graphics technology, showing nation flags and WR moving splits, but 90% of the time no info is on screen except a simple timer. Since some races can take many minutes, I'd really like a small graphic telling me the event and heat#.

I hate that i can't stream because i don't have a cable subscription. Screw you Comcast; this doesnt make me more likely to buy cable, it just means i'll use an alternative to your internet service whenever possible.

They (NBC) seem to have responded to some of the criticism of 2008 - instead of stringing along the audience interminably - they seem to at least be sticking with logical breaks in the action.

So - they've resorted to completely clouding the schedule in order to keep you tuned in to their BS.

Random US-centric observations:

Usain Bolt is apparently now an honorary American. He's getting far more coverage on NBC than our own sprinter (Tyson-somebody). Not that I actually mind, I was rooting for him in Beijing & I'll do so again for him in London. It's a rare treat to watch the fastest man to ever live (that we know of) race =)

Also honorary Americans: The British men's gymnastics team, when our own completely self-destructs.

Ryan Lochte was madly overhyped. Phelps, Franklin hyped just enough. Cullen Jones & Aly Raisman should have gotten better coverage, along with seemingly a half-dozen US swimmers who have shown up out of the ether and won metals or trials.

If I hear one more news source complain about how Jordyn Wieber was totally cheated, I'm gonna puke.

Watching Japan lawyer their way into a Men's gymnastics silver was painful.

I defense of my ole' high-school buddy Lochte Bob, he did dominate recent international competition.

Good god, NBC has Seacrest doing interviews? Thank goodness for the BBC. BBC website is awesome. No stupid interviews and all the sports NBC won't ever air. I recommend expatshield for all your IP-forwarding needs...

If only we were watching that tongue

Btw, I'll type in defense of NBC. I haven't seen much at all of Seacrest & most of their commentators are pretty good. Bob Costas is excellent. Their website has live coverage of like every event, occasionally unreliable but it's not really terrible or anything. My biggest complaint is that in gymnastics they're pretty bad about showing scores for foreign routines.

Oh also, holy crap China. This has been a thrilling competition so far- much better than Athens was (Beijing won't be surpassed in my mind for a long time) jive

(another very US-centric post coming)

Lochte was overhyped a bit and that's not completely his fault, but he did talk pretty big going into all this so that's what happens. He was great in the 400IM though. Speaking of which, this has been sufficiently beaten to death, but I really do wish Phelps had skipped the 400IM as he originally planned. Just seems that at this point in his career he'd be wise to save his energy for his better events. Sunrise - how well did you know Lochte? That's pretty cool.

Didn't take long for someone to fire doping allegations at Chinese swimmers. Though China doesn't exactly have a sparkling reputation for fair play, so while it struck me as very much sour grapes, it's kind of understandable.

My complaints about NBC is more the little things. They've had 4 years to prepare for this and they've always covered the Olympics, but it feels like they've never done this before or something. Like yesterday, I had some time before the 8PM coverage, so I popped onto their streaming website to see if I could watch some highlights/replays of the minor events I haven't gotten a chance to really watch. I was greeted with spoilers ALL over their website. I mean, really? NBC goes to such lengths to preserve the tape-delay, but surely they of all people could help us out on the spoilers front right? I wasn't particularly shocked that I got spoiled on a thing or two, but I figured it'd be Facebook and not NBC. Not a huge deal as I quickly browsed away, but I just don't understand how that happens really. Stuff like this is just comical:

http://deadspin.com/5930359/nbc-runs-tod...out-to-air

But yeah, I don't really mind the tape delay and the coverage is generally a bit better than you would believe by seeing all the complaints, but stuff like the above is just bizarre.
