I guess we wouldn't have met people extremely fast anyway with our spiral exploration method, but I do think that once the new warrior comes out we're going to need to be much more focused on meeting people. Getting those early contacts is really useful, especially with 8 civs to find.

No, we have to use our first warrior first to secure the Mansa's Muse settling party (needed on T32), and then as military police in AO. Our second warrior (and probably third as well) will probably have to help secure our third city, which will have to secure iron or horses.

It's probably not until T50 that we can divert any real resources to scouting. But then we can hopefully send out WCs to scout.

Yes, the biggest weakness of our planned opening is that we don't have any units free to scout. Everything is going into turbo-charging our growth curve (which we do in impressive fashion!) As kjn said, we need War Chariots to do scouting in depth. The good news is that we'll have both Bronze Working and Animal Husbandry shortly after T40, and if we don't already have copper/horses, we can claim them with our third city, then push out some chariots to go make contact.

It's not ideal but this is a big map with barbs roaming everywhere. Contact isn't going to happen too quickly for most teams. The alternative is slowing down the growth curve to build more units, and we simply do not want to make that tradeoff.

Early contact is a bigger deal for tech trading games and it takes a long time for start of game diplo to really get established in non-tech trading games. Not such a huge deal.

Sommer will be pushing out for scouting and establishing diplo with as many teams as fast as possible. Honestly, I don't think we want to be left out of Sommer's famous skewed alliances; In the last demo-game he forged alliances 4v2 and planned later on 3v1 and 2v1 so his team always would be on the majority side.

I don't think we want to be left out of a 6v2 alliance which I don't doubt he'll be trying his hardest to create.

Even Sommer/CFC has only one warrior to do stuff with at the moment. If they push out scouts to establish early contact, they will be lacking in other areas. And I doubt we have a place in a Sommer-Alliance anyway.

CFC seems to be going for a worker-BW opening, so they won't have scouts for a long time. And warriors are slow and don't have a long life expectancy, as we noticed.

That said, once we have WCs I think we should push scouting hard (at least two, maybe four WCs out scouting). Even if alliances take a longer time to form in NTT games, that also means that starting work with them should begin earlier as well.

The point isn't to join his alliance, but to make sure any alliance we create is of an equal power to his, or isn't a "who was the other player left out in the cold". If he simply dogpiles people to victory it really doesn't matter how good his team is, but if we force things to be equal, they only win if they can play civ decently.

In my opinion "Sommer's sweet talk" is not THE major threat in this game. Sure its good to know what he was capable of doing in the past, but if we focus our plans on "MUST COUNTER CFC ALLIANCE" we have lost this game already, as I am sure we will neglect a different facet of this particular game. Sure, lets go for war chariots, because they are a good deterrent, a good fog busting and scouting unit and a decent unit all around, but lets not rush out war chariots only because we have to make contact early with everyone, so we can counter CFC.

I totally agree, but we need to cognizant of potential threats out there as well. Sommer is a threat (not The threat. smile ), and if we try to go it alone people will just get more scared of us and more willing to dogpile us when sommer sweet talks them.
