@kjn: Use the second script, it doesn't use growths from 0 to 1. I think you should be set for now, but let me know if you need any changes. Also, if you can post some of the results. Also, if there are other problems that can be solved via some code, let me know.

FWIW, the code can be changed to deal with growth of more than 1 but as you said, that's not something likely to happen and I think it's better to keep it simple.

That can't happen (a size 1 city with +5000fpt (say, 5000 great merchants settle) will be size 11 in 10t), but because a decline of more than 1 can happen, does the code need to be able to handle that?

With 20 minutes left on the clock and a late turn German city founding, here is the related demographics screen:

I had already managed to get that, but thanks anyway!

Anyway, the Germans claimed another 5 land tiles with their new city and is the second team to five cities, but I missed to note its name.

T66 - 1360BC

Cliff's Notes: Apolyton is the first team to research a classical tech, tentatively Mathematics, and they also grew their fourth city to size 3. WPC researched an ancient tech, tentatively Pottery. CivFr one-turned a tech, and I've tentatively noted it as Fishing, and gained another pop. Univers also grew another pop.

Demos:

Another turn of many and large score increases, despite no team receiving land points (those are due on T70 and T71).

TeamScore changeCause
RB73 pop
WPC6Ancient tech
Apolyton14Classical tech, 1 pop
Germans6Ancient tech
CivFr9Ancient tech, 1 pop
Univers21 pop

So 3 ancient techs, 1 classical tech, and 3 pop points this turn. Total power increased with 14000, of which 2000 came from pop (Univers and Apolyton). Total rival population rose with 57000, which corresponds to one city growing to size 4 and two to size 3. From rival best in population Apolyton grew their fourth city to size 3, and CivFr and Univers get the other two growths. But according to my earlier reading of the situation, Univers has only cities of size 5 and 1! banghead

Something is seriously wrong here.

The Germans claimed an additional land tile, which might be a claim of a surrounded tile.

WPC got an ancient tech in 9t, Apolyton a classical in 11t, the Germans an ancient tech in 14t, and CivFr an ancient in 1t! This was coupled with a significant drop in rival average and worst GNP. I pencil in Pottery for WPC (probably the last team to get it), Animal Husbandry for the Germans, and Fishing for CivFr.

For Apolyton I pencil in Mathematics - it fits with a large increase in power, and 50bpt over 9t fits reasonably well with 36bpt over 6t (as when they researched Bronze Working) with some scientists. The reason I don't think they researched Iron Working is that two teams had reasonably large power increases last turn, since we went from 2@49 to 4@50 in power from T65 to T66, and IW leaves too little for the next team. Aesthetics is an outside option.

That leaves 4000 in power, which might be a spear or a chariot.

WPC settled their fourth city this turn, only 5t after their third, ie they probably performed a 2-pop settler whip on T63.

Demos:

Their power increased with 1000, to 79000. The city claimed 7 tiles. I think Univers is the new rival worst with 53 tiles, and that means it probably was the Spanish who got a border expansion on T63, probably from a monument, since they would be rival worst at 50-52 tiles otherwise.

The Great Population Mystery is SOLVED! jive

(Except now I'm too tired to do anything but possibly limbo into bed.)

Basically, I re-visited every pop change during the entire game using Kalin's scripts to find all possible changes, and focusing on checking every permutation - I was up to 3-1-2-2 (with one or two very early branches discarded early) when I finally found the cause of the error. I had assumed that Univers didn't have a size 5 capital, so put that growth on CivPlayers.

Bad assumption.

The figures are correct for T64 now, but I have a few guesses I'll have to keep an eye out for.

I'm too tired to do a proper presentation now, but our population data is finally correct on the C&D sheets.

The two branches from T64 appears to fold into themselves and become the same on T65. I will update our dossier tomorrow.
