Hooray! Scratch what I said about trading for iron and steel. I had Gustaran dig a few more access shafts into the first cavern to have a peek of what lies within. And at the very bottom he spotted Hematite, iron ore! Even native aluminium, although only one tile of it so far. Aluminium is quite valuable but only used for furniture and crafts. Iron, though is excellent. Since we also have marble we can make steel, the best metal for weapons and armor!
Uberfish, the mayor celebrates the discovery with demanding 2 war hammers being forged!

I am currently planning how to breach properly into the first cavern and how to deal with the forgotten beasts in there.
The squads might finally see some real action!

Just gave birth to T-Hawk. Not assigned to any squads but knows a bit how to wield a war hammer!
Appears unremarkable, but is actually a very valuable all rounder, taking care not only of medical stuff but also solely responsible for the soap making in the fortress! Furthermore involved in milking, shearing and spinning. Although knowledgeable in plant processing, this particular task has not been in need yet.

Her preference for penguin men is somewhat puzzling! wink

She arrived at the beginning of Shaftwinds 2nd year.

To answer the question: Medicine is not in the game. Plant processing involves threshing various plants. See here.

The entrance to the first cavern has been secured by some stone fall traps and weapon traps. Also both squads, the axedwarves and the crossbows are assigned to defend the burrow defined behind the traps. A few war dogs are also stationed there.
Gustaran quickly dug a path to access the cavern. And one of the beast, "Lathi the Lurid Cavern":

Here the situation with Lathi approaching the nervous dwarves:

Suspense, suspense!

In the end it was an easy win for our dwarves.
Cyneheard was still working on a stone fall trap when the Forgotten Best approached. Luckily it did not go for the only civilian in the area. Also the stone fall traps did not trigger, not sure why.
Once the beast rounded the corner, it was greeted by a flurry of bolts. Two actually found their target. The honour goes to Enochand Catwalk.
Then to my dismay, the crossbowdwarves, not encumbered by a heavy set of bronze armor, were the first to engage in hand to pincer combat, trying to bash the Beast to death with their wooden crossbows. With mixed results.
Also the four war dogs were quick to react and attack.

From the axedwarves only VM and Antisocialmunky were quick enough to land a few axe blows on target before Catwalk finished the Beast off with an expertly shot bolt to the head. Reload time being pretty awesome!

One war dog got bitten in a toe. Lets see whether there was poison involved in that bite.

Here the log:

The Beast weighted 5.7tons btw. Plenty of meat for Mardoc to turn into delicatessen!

I will order a slab to be engraved in memory of the Beast and put it into Catwalk's room.

Now, lets see if we can kill the second beast, a salamander that shoots webs.

You probably missed it, but I edited my last post to include a request for a full status update.

Nice work on the hairy crab, and finding iron.

This is the second forgotten beast:

Since it is blind (?) and likes to swim it took a while for my dwarves to attract its attention, luring it onto land.
Unfortunately the first volley of bolts missed and the Beast managed to web Serdoa. But the axedwarves have closed the gap are starting to attack it.

The web entangles Brackard our militia commander as well, which is especially unfortunately as it happens right next to the Beast!
And Brackard dies!

While more and more dwarves engage, the webs prove to be a problem. This is Thoth's situation:

Just when he freed himself he got webbed again. smile

The good thing is we have Catwalk with the team. His aim is very good. The same goes for Enoch. I think the other crossbowdwarves are actually out of ammo.

...

Much later, the squads are still fighting the heavily injured Beast. Catwalk has run out of bolts and rushes the Beast swinging his crossbow as a club. Unfortunately he gets his ankle broken and is thus the second dwarf suffering injury, although not fatal.
...
Well, minutes later, the Beast bites Catwalk in the head.
They more or less die together, as the Beast dies of all the wounds it suffered.

In the end the kill gets credited to Thoth! Well done!
The full battle log is very long. I won't post it here. It was a combined effort of many dwarves of both squads.
Two deaths, our militia commander Brackard and the killer of the first beast and very good marksdwarf Catwalk!
But now the first cavern lies open and iron is within reach, as well as plenty of gems and trees.
