Epic Twenty-four - Pax Americana - Now Open!

invy: please be careful of the spoilers!

Having a tech stolen from you is not grounds to declare a Blood Enemy.

I overlooked counterespionage. It should be in the same boat as Steal Technology and allowed without invasion penalty. The basic idea is that anything that damages the target civ counts as invasion (sabotage, steal treasury, poison water, incite revolt, incite unhappiness, change civics/religion.)

Looks impressive, this setup... If I didn't have an education to take, I would definately be in for this... Two small things:

1: I am privateering an ENGLISH fleet in FRENCH territory. France throws ships at my privateer - am I invading?

2: "Pax Americana" is also a protest-punk song by the danish band "Riffelsyndikatet" ("The Rifle Syndicate" - named after a firm selling the germans arms during WW2). Just so you know. Find it somewhere on the net, even if you dont know danish, and yell yourself hoarse in the chorus while playing

If France is attacking you, that's OK. (If they lose, it's their fault for suiciding.) When you attack a French unit in French territory, that's invading.

I think Pax Americana was history before it was punk smile

Is giving units to the AIs OK?

T-hawk Wrote:These go together, and are a very good point I overlooked. Collectively, these moves allow the player to rescue a losing civ without declaring hot war. Civ 3 didn't have these options so it's a new factor to consider. I could go either way on this. Any opinions?

I lean towards allowing the options. Thematically, both align very well with modern American foreign policy. Perhaps the target of a bought peace treaty or gifted military unit automatically becomes Blood Brother, to add an element of risk and opportunity cost?

I missed this discussion earlier, and I didn't see a definitive answer in the thread. No forbidding text was added to the rules page so I'm guessing both are allowed; and since nothing was changed in the Blood Brother section I assume you are free to do this with any civ. Let me know if I'm wrong on these points.

Correct Timmy, no rules changes. Gifting units to AIs or bribing them for peace are both allowed without restriction. No impact on BB/BE situations.

Sorry, I should have paid more attention/asked more questions before opening. Rules page says we can choose Blood Enemy anytime before reaching the future age - just to be sure, we don't have to choose them at the time a war crime is committed?

So if civ X declares on us, we can postpone making them Blood Enemy until the future age if we want (provided we don't lose a city to them). Or if Y eliminates Z (and we have met both, so definitely know whodunit), we can wait to declare them Blood Enemy until Future Age.

Correct on all counts again, timmy. It's really not that complicated. smile Note that there is scoring incentive to choose and eliminate BE sooner than the modern era. The player gets to balance that against keeping their options open.

Also note that if this sequence happens: 1) war crime, 2) you invade, 3) you choose them as Blood Enemy, that's still an invasion penalty. IOW, choosing a BE doesn't retroactively cancel an invasion.

I was the kid who was always afraid of asking possibly stupid questions in class, and am making up for that now smile

More seriously, just want to make sure I don't spend a ton of time on a game operating under a false assumption about rules or strategy derived from them. Thanks for the very prompt answers.

hey - when do the various ages (ie industrial age?) in civ start?
I have finally decided to put down some cash and register a website. It is www.ruffhi.com. Now I remain free to move the hosting options without having to change the name of the site.

Industrial is upon getting either Steel, Steam Power, or Scientific Method.
Modern is one of Refrigeration, Radio, Rocketry, Flight, Plastics. (These are from the vanilla reference chart, not sure if the BTS tech tree changes altered any of the modern era thresholds. In-game, if you're not yet in the Modern Age and mouseover the techs you can research (using the main interface, not F6) it will say "Advances to the Modern Age" if it does.
