The musical genome project is a brilliant bit of research, IMO, that fuses selectable tunage with intelligent musical genre association.
Tonight, on my Irish/Piratical music channel, I got once again a gift of a Stan Rogers tune I'd not heard in years.
The Witch of the Westmoreland.
I was introduced to Rogers and Canadian maritime music over 15 years ago by a good Canadian friend, and helicopter pilot I might add, whilst sipping Guinness and Labatts and arguing over who the next great Canadian golfer would be. (I guessed Weir, and it looks as though I was right.)
For those who are not familiar, Pandora.com can bring you some wonderful play lists that suit your ear. Part of the fun is hearing stuff you might like: some you will, and some you won't.
I am now listening to a cover of I'm Gonna Be (500 miles) (by Two Davids) the as sung live by The Proclaim. Most of my play list is Great Big Sea. Try them first if you like both Irish and Maritime. If nothing else, you'll get nearly every version of Whiskey In The Jar ever done.
Bring your own Guinness.

I loved Pandora and listened to it a lot, until they banned all non-US listeners (identified by the IP address) because of "licensing constraints".
Globalisation? Yeah, right.

*sigh* Ah, the good old days when I could listen to Pandora... now I'm usually too bored to proxify myself in the US so ah well
Nice clip, WB!

I personally find it disheartening that, as a Canadian, I can't listen to some great Canadian music 'cause I'm not a DAMN YANKEE!

-Kylearan Globalization has no inherent virture. My daughter is in the music business, and is now learning about licensing and pay for performance, and all that. Sorry that you don't care for the laws varying from place to place. That the US/Canada deal can't be overcome is a disappointment to me.
PS: licensing issues I support. I am anti hacker in PC games as well. The two concepts are related.
I am not going to get into a side track over politics.
Not gonna.

Hi,

What I meant is that it annoys me that the industry is all for globalization when it benefits them, but on the other hand often ignores the customers' desires when it comes to music (Pandora et al), movies (German DVDs from US movies often lack English audio to subtitles), PC games (often badly translated, and it's nigh impossible to get original US versions here), etc.
I know I don't have any right to be allowed to listen to Pandora. That I'm not allowed to pisses me off nonetheless, and makes me mad at the music industry. And for what it's worth, Pandora has lots of German music in their repository, too.

Just for the record: I buy all my games and music, and am anti piracy as well.

And I never intended to start such a discussion. I was merely venting my frustration about losing one of my favorite internet radio stations, so lighten up and show some pity the next time Pandora surprises you with some nice piece of music you didn't know about before.
Cheers!
