Heh, yeah, I wrote the book on that effect.

Free Religion wasn't used. I stayed in Org Rel the whole game, except for flipping to Pacifism's no upkeep while building ship parts. I almost never go to Free Religion in general. FR's "+10%" research is really closer to +5% when added on top of library/university/academy, while Org Rel's bonus stays closer to a true +25% for longer.

Post factories, the bonuses of OR and FR are about equal, but the other benefits of a state religion always win: AP hammers, Sankore science, Sistine culture, and strong relations with religious buddies.

Quote:The difference is even bigger in the window between Oxford and Wall Street. Building Espionage buildings + a few spies + a Caravel or two might be quite a few beakers, but I do remember you stole Banking+Rifling + <others?>.

Banking and Rifling were my only steals. I built maybe 600 hammers worth of espionage buildings, 200 of spies, and one galleon. The steals were 2000+ beakers, more than building Wealth with those hammers. The beaker-gold skew effect won't reach 2:1 even with academies and Oxford. But it's close and worth the analysis. smile

Hm, not sure why I wasn't in OR. I do remember being worried about relations - didn't want any AI closing off OB with great lighthouse trade routes. In retrospect that was rather stupid, especially since Asoka doesn't mind wrong religion much, and the other two would get offsetting favorite civic boni. I think that going with Pacifism originally was OK but OR for a while would probably have improved the game a little, good observation.

You sure did - that was (and is) a great article. Actually in Epic 23 I had a 100% gold multiplier in my core cities while only a 35-50% science multiplier (an academy threw off the average). This meant I could run scientists in underdeveloped cities, which is fairly rare in my games. smile

Free Religion still allows AP hammers from the relevant religion, and more happiness + culture options. Often the diplomatic considerations mean that I consider FR better (in this game it meant I could trade resources will all the AIs).

I'm going to make a wild guess and say it's because you never learned Monotheism. smile
