I normally don't do stuff like this, but this was simply too amazing to not post here.
For those that don't know, Overclocked Remix is a site/community dedicated to remixing music from video games; over the years there have been some pretty amazing mixes put out there from orchestral to trance to heavy metal. The reason I mention this is because one of the mixes that recently appeared on OCR is from Civ 4, based on the song from the game "Baba Yetu."
Not having heard any of the soundtracks from any Civ game before, I downloaded this song with an "eh, we'll see" mindset. If Civ wasn't an RB game I might possibly have passed it up, but my curiosity was peaked. To say I was blown away is an understatement. It's one of those songs where the more I hear it the more I enjoy it.
Anyways, you can find the remix here. For those wondering about the legality of this sort of thing, it's legal in the same way Fan Art and Fan Fiction are and the composer of the original piece sent one of the remixers his score from the piece to help him out. For those also interested, there's an interview with the composer, Christopher Tin, on the site as well; you can read that here.

Certainly not bad, but I prefer the original. If you've never heard it, definitely check it out Lurker Wyrm. Baba Yetu has become something of a cult classic; there are actually lots of videos on Youtube of various choral groups performing it. For my money's worth, nothing beats watching the original in-game opening video, where the music swells to a crescendo just as the sun rises over the planet Earth... well, check it out if you've never see it!

I love OC Remix. There's some amazing Final Fantasy 1, Castlevania, and Mega Man stuff on there, among many others.
Thanks for the pointer. I too prefer the original Baba Yetu, but this was well worth a listen.

Heck, there are a ton of mixes on some of the more popular FF tunes, but I still prefer the original music for the most part, which is the way it's going to pretty much always be. There's just something about the original vs. a re-arranged version.

It's a cult classic in the sense The Princess Bride is a cult classic; that is, it's not but people think it is. It's one of the pieces featured in VGL (Video Games Live), a concert featuring music from video games, which has played some pretty big stages. If you read the interview with Christopher Tin, they talk about how popular the song has become, as well as some of the background of the song.
I actually downloaded the Civ 4 demo to hear the original (will try the game at some point) and I have to say I'm very impressed. I'll have to listen to it a few (hundred) more times.

Ok, so after listening to the original a few dozen times I think I like it better than the remix as well.
I did some research on the song to see what the Swahili translated to and found out it's a translation of the Lord's Prayer. Very interesting indeed. Those interested can find the translation work in this thread on CivFanatics, as well as an mp3 download for the song (apparently Firaxis released it a while ago, go me, Mr. Oblivious).

So, am I pissing in the Cheerios if I state that I preferred the original Civ4 opening music, "The Rainmaker" ?
*Especially* as the sun rises over earth.
There are those on RBD that know of what I speak 8-).
I'd post the mp3 of the original opening, but I'm not sure of the rights issues and don't want to get the board in trouble. Plus it is about 12 meg

I never liked the Rainmaker, but that's just personal taste. A lot of people on the development team definitely preferred that one.

Speaking of music, I was thinking of sending a bunch of hard-hitting pipe gangsters to go to work on Firaxis developers and, all in all, massage their feet (read: just get medieval on their *****) when they exchanged Baba Yetu with some generic Latin chanting and stuff. Baba Yetu just felt unique... so I felt really relieved when you could reverse the process in CivComplete.
