Diplomacy Master Thread- Helping Your Opponents Beat Themselves

As I said before, I think the strongest and easiest suggested deal is simply to offer gems + spices to the Germans for their marble. It makes us sound generous, builds more phony goodwill towards them, and allows us to avoid fooling around with workers. Since the marble will lock down Taj Mahal for our team and make it vastly easier to build National Epic, I value it as being worth 4-5 happiness resources. I would honestly do that for 10 turns of marble in a heartbeat. Getting marble for 2 excess luxuries that we're not even using is laughably lopsided in our favor.

But I don't really care that much. If you want to try and bargain them down to something lesser, go ahead. Personally I don't think that's worth the time or effort, but do as you will. I would much rather not do anything involving our workers, largely because we have plenty for them to do and it will make my life writing and playing out the worker moves significantly more difficult.

If anything has worked for us in this game diplomatically, it's presenting offers that appear to be generous on the surface, while actually being hugely in our favor in the long run. smile

The proximity to WPC means you might want to let them know what we've agreed to reduce the chance of them sniping the German workers.

One way to make them interested in pushing for marble quick is to do spices now, and then gems once they connect the marble and send it our way.

Also, we don't need the marble until T131. I'm not even sure having it earlier will help the NE that much, given that Eastern Dealers will have to finish both the theatre and the library before it can start on the NE.

But I agree with Sullla that any way we can get marble is good for us. Keep up the good work, Scooter thumbsup

This sounds a good suggestion. In the negotiations we need to clarify the dates and preferably without saying exactly when we need it (T131).

I think giving them spices now could actually slow down the hookup - they'll have less incentive.

I agree with sulla - tell them as soon as they have marble we will give them both happies for it immediately - that will be a lot of incentive for them to hook it up quickly.
Please don't go. The drones need you. They look up to you.

I don't see a reason to give them spices before they hook up marble. They want their happy, they better hook up the marble asap.

I also agree with this. Big reward for them to do it asap.

Thinking logistically, we've established that they will need a total of 17 worker turns to get this done. I think this is a realistic barrier for us and should be part of the dialogue. We can start by asking what is the soonest they would be able to have the marble hooked up, recognizing that it is desert and requires roads. We have no idea if they have any workers in the nearby area, and if so, how many that would be. I don't want to start by offering our worker labor, but at the end of the day, it is in our own best interest to see that the resource is hooked up in a timely manner. If that means we send a worker up there and make the roads, so be it. I think that is a decent compromise. Even though they're getting two happy resources, we benefit much more, we're not using the surplus resources, and if we are short of worked tiles because we send a worker north, we just whip a worker to compensate. I'm sensitive to the issue of having to redo the micro plan, and I admit that I do not know where this presumed worker whip would come from. This is just something to consider.

From our border at Forbidden Fruit, a worker would require 2-3 turns travel to the grass tile 1E of Wilhelmshaven. I'm looking in game now with the micro plan to see specifically what tradeoffs would be necessary to accommodate to evaluate whether it is worth it. But, to reiterate, I think anything that we do (within reason) that aids in securing the marble is worth it. Moving a worker up is worth it, to me.

Suggested draft - I'm going to go ahead and offer the two luxuries to make sure we just get this thing done. This team responds too slowly for us to afford haggling a little bit I think.

Draft to German Team Wrote:GWT,

We are a little thin on workers right now so chopping the jungle may not be feasible right now. In order to make it up to you, how about we trade you both the spices and gems for the marble in the meantime? In return we would just ask that you do not cancel the deal any time before T140. Let me know if this is acceptable to you guys - if so, we have a deal!

As soon as you can hook the marble we can make the deal. Any idea how long that will take you?

Thanks,
scooter - Team RB

I am thinking that it may be better to say: to keep it simple we will offer you both luxes as soon as you can give us marble.
