Looks like Plako popped a tech from a hut on top of getting a FIN leader. How is that fair?
Anyway to kill time while waiting for the re-load I thought I'd roll some possible Big & Small maps (low sea level is different to the sandbox, but I don't think it matters there). And this one is why I think we're due another land-based resource:
I think with the map generator you get at least 2 and sea food only counts as 0.4, so right now we're at 1.8 - so we could get a deer or a fur on the trees or almost anything on the flatland. Fingers crossed.
And these are seven maps I just generated. No guarantee that all the settings are included (massive/normal/snakey continents, islands or tiny islands, islands separate or mixed in) but it gives a feel for how the map will look.
Early sailing, work boat scouts and the great lighthouse all look good here. Perhaps just a work boat scout for us though, we've got other things to think about.
Also it could be a false correlation, but three of the maps had corn near the start, all pretty close to the north pole. It'd be good not to be in the tropics with other teams on all sides...

Very good observations! Yeah, let's move SE-E with the scout. It does reveal the most tiles (huts!), fits probably better with our scouting plans and gives at least as much information reg the possible PH plant as SE-SE.
I think the location of that PH is awkward, I believe that it would create us problems when we try to dotmap around those fishes. However, if there is a 6-foodhammer resource... That would make a difference! Our fishes will be eventually nice +6 food tiles, but that's still far away in the future and sea resources make for a slower and less flexible start. A 6-yield tile + PH start would speed everything quite a bit.
Re plako: Now it will be even more impressive when we run over his rifles with modern armor...  Seriously though, it's T0 and I already have a feeling that we are far behind.. I hope I'm wrong!

Dry Rice? Outside the BFC?
Settle in place then? This looks pretty bad terrain, but we're too used to lush PBEM maps. I think we're going to expand relatively quickly and crush all before us. Just not sure exactly how yet.
Where do you want to scout next turn?
What error message are you getting? Can you log into the demogame for Gillette? Is there a trailing space in the ip?

Yeah, dry rice is not too spectacular.. For food-hammer purposes it's not better than a regular mine. I hate to miss the speed that we would gain from settling the PH, but I think we just have to suck it. Moving away from those two fish tiles would probably be  Haven't simmed it though. (Damn, if there is something awesome 2S of the PH!)
So yes, I think we both agree to SIP, not select a tech and start a worker? T0 should thereby be done..
Next turn our scouting options are probably E-NE & SE-SE or what do you think? SE-SE would probably reveal more tiles, but if we want to do some kind of NE-E-SE-S-SW-W-NW circling around our capital E-NE could be the better option. Do you know what I mean?
Re connection: I just get immediately "can't connect to host" message. I have never tried to join a pitboss before so I guess the problem is caused by my firewall or some basic stuff that I've missed. I'm not especially good with computers.. I should have time in afternoon for a retry.

We scouted and settled in place.
Started a worker and didn't select a tech to research. We have another important early-game decision: what to call ourselves? Any ideas? Anyway I've ended turn and as there are only four other teams left to do so we might get another turn tonight...

Yeah, let's try to avoid being last to end the turn. That way nobody will be mad at us if we once or twice require more time to make decision. (On the other hand, lets not rush if we are uncertain what to do and there is still some time left)
What are your thoughts on scouting? We want to pop at least mining from the hut.. And find wet corn for our 2nd city
Re naming, I suck. I trust you and Hydra completely in that matter!

The first mistake of many... And those are both great lighthearted-doom names, or we could have something like Abandon All Hope Land or the Ill-fated Empire or the Damned Disunited?
On scouting I think we should explore up to about a city-diameter away on the NE coast before circling around to get as much info for settling cities as possible. We can worry about contacting people once the known tech bonus actually makes a difference or we can get trade routes (not til alphabet right?)
